Everyone makes mistakes, especially in college. But when you’re the daughter of the President of the United States, any little slip up is a huge embarrassment. Maddie McGuire’s latest error in judgment lands her in police custody, giving the press a field day. Agreeing to do community service as penance and to restore her tattered reputation, Maddie never dreams incredibly good looking but extremely annoying vice president’s son, Jake Simmon, will be along for the ride.

Recently returning from Afghanistan with a life-altering injury, Jake is wrestling with his own demons. He doesn’t have the time or patience to deal with the likes of Maddie. They’re like oil and water and every time they’re together, it’s combustible. But there’s a thin line between love and hate, and it’s not long before their fiery arguments give way to infinitely sexier encounters.

When Jake receives devastating news about the last remaining member of his unit, the darkness he’s resisted for so long begins to overwhelm him. Scared to let anyone close, he pushes Maddie away. But she isn’t about to give up on Jake that easily. Maddie’s fallen for him, and she’ll do anything to keep him from the edge as they both discover that love is a battlefield and there are some fights you just can’t lose.

– EXCERPT –

bedmates-rdl-teaser-1The hand on the back of my neck tilted my head so he could kiss me better and I melted against him. I’d waited for this moment most of my life and I sure as hell wasn’t disappointed.

The kiss wasn’t rushed, wasn’t abrupt. It was slow, lingering brushes of lips, as our breaths slid over each other. It was an intense, raw moment as we tested unknown waters and what we found only increased our determination. When his tongue swiped across my bottom lip in a request for entrance I opened on a sigh. His free hand caressed my hip before sliding around to the small of my back, tucking me against him.

The feel of his hard body pressed against me made my head spin. Every delectable inch of him was hard in just the right way. As his mouth danced over mine, fire ran through my veins. Everywhere that he touched me came alive and I wrapped my arms around his neck, hungry to feel more of him pressed to me. This was what I’d been looking for all these years. I felt alive and appreciated with each stroke of his tongue and touch of his hands.

His arm tightened around my waist and my feet left the ground. I gasped as he sat me on the unfinished kitchen island. Dark brown eyes drilled into mine as his hands slid down to cup my ass before gently spreading my legs so that he could fit between them. He pressed against my center and I couldn’t help but groan as he pulled me tight. Wrapping my legs around his hips I pushed even closer, trying to relieve the building ache.

He groaned into my mouth and I took the moment to nip his bottom lip. I’d wanted to do that forever; to feel it plump between my teeth. One of his hands squeezed my ass tighter and he grinded his erection into me, causing my head to fall backward on a gasp of pleasure. Each move against me made me gasp louder, and my eyes fell shut. With one hand he pulled my hair free from the rubber band before tangling his fingers in it.

“God, you taste good.” His voice was raw, harsh, and it sent shivers down my spine. He ran his nose along the column of my throat before nipping gently below my ear. “Should have done this forever ago.”

– REVIEW –

Twenty-one year old Maddie McGuire is passionate about animals — she volunteers at a shelter, she’s vegan in her diet — she’ll even chance getting arrested in an attempt to free animals from testing labs. She truly has a noble heart for her cause. Unfortunately, getting busted makes bad press when you’re the daughter of the sitting President of the United States, and Maggie’s dad happens to hold that office. What is the President’s staff going to do with this strong-willed girl?

Jake Simmon, son of the current Vice-President, is a young veteran, injured in a deadly incident in Afghanistan. Wounded inside and out, Jake is trying to adapt to civilian life in the fishbowl of Washington politics — something very difficult to do when your mom is the Vice President. Apparently, to her, image is everything.

Jake and Maddie have known each other for years. They’ve been, at times, the unintentional collateral damage of their parents political ambitions.  But when Jake returns to Washington, he finds the annoying Maddie of his younger years has grown into a lovely, caring woman. Thrown together in a work project for returning wounded veterans, Jake and Maddie realize they’re more than attracted to one another. What happens when Jake’s ghosts from Afghanistan resurface? How does Maddie deal with a powerful Vice President who disapproves of her relationship with Jake? Does their romance even stand a chance?

Bedmates by Nichole Chase is the first offering in her American Royalty Series. It is a stand alone novel, and although characters from her previous series make appearances in Bedmates, you do not have to have read any of Chase’s other stories to appreciate this book.

Maddie is an endearing character, but at times I struggled with her behavior. For example: here’s Maddie, the staunch animal rights activist, who, when given the opportunity to aid in the creation of legislation that will aid her passionate cause, muses:

“Yes, I wanted to better the world for the animals and for everyone else, but did I want to hitch myself to the cause for eternity?”

Kindle Loc. 3339 of 5940

Okay — Maddie’s referencing the legislative process, which, granted may take years. What struck this reader was her ambiguity towards what was supposed to be the cause that has, so far, dictated her life’s actions. So although I found Maddie sweet, she also struck me throughout this book as a little flighty.

The character of Jake was solid. Author Chase is very effective in showing her readers the trauma, both physical and mental, that injured veterans experience. Jake’s struggles were a heart-wrenching and caused me, at times, to pause for a moment to absorb what I had just read.

Initially, this story was light in tone, but developed into a sometimes somber read exploring serious issues.  And while the plot moved at a brisk pace, I found the balance between significant parts of the story to be a bit uneven.

Overall, Bedmates is more than just a romance between two young people caught in the political craziness — it’s more a tale of the lives of those caught up in the political ambitions of others.

Note:  Bedmates contains scenarios dealing with PTSD (including flashbacks of intense military action), and well as explicit sexual scenes.
