arrangedKash Kamdar is the king of a peaceful but powerful island nation. As Loa Mali’s sovereign, he is always in control, the final authority. Until his mother uses an ancient law to force her son into marriage. His prospective queen is a buttoned-up intellectual, nothing like Kash’s usual party girl. Still, from the moment of their forced engagement, he can’t stop thinking about her.

Dayita Samar comes from one of Loa Mali’s most respected families. The Oxford-educated scientist has dedicated her life to her country’s future. But under her staid and calm exterior, Day hides a few sexy secrets of her own. She is willing to marry her king, but also agrees that they can circumvent the law. Just because they’re married doesn’t mean they have to change their lives. It certainly doesn’t mean they have to fall in love.

After one wild weekend in Dallas, Kash discovers his bride-to-be is more than she seems. Engulfed in a changing world, Kash finds exciting new possibilities for himself. Could Day help him find respite from the crushing responsibility he’s carried all his life? This fairy tale could have a happy ending, if only they can escape Kash’s past…

– EXCERPT –

“Are we a happy couple?”

“I don’t think we’ve had time enough to be sure of that yet, but I know we were once.” She’d thought it through in a way she never had before. She had a much different view of those months with Kash in England. “You were courting me back then, weren’t you? You wanted me to be your girlfriend.”

He sat down in the plush chair that dominated the sitting area portion of his bedroom. Normally they stayed in the living room, but he’d wanted more privacy. This was the only place in his suite that wasn’t covered by CCTV, the only place where they could truly be alone. Everything about the space was masculine and decadent, including the man himself. With his hair disheveled and his chest on display, it wasn’t hard at all to see him as a primal male.

One she’d dearly enjoy taming.

“I don’t think you realized it at the time.”

She was willing to admit her faults. “I didn’t. I had my nose in a book most of the time back then and I had little experience with men. No, I had no idea you were interested in me beyond copying my notes from class when you slept in.”

“It would surprise you to know that I often thought about sleeping in with you.” His voice had gone low and gentle. “I was crazy about you back then, Day. I find myself in the same position today, but I don’t want to scare you. I know you think we should take this slow and I will honor your wishes, but I want this marriage to work. You see me as a playboy, but I don’t want to be some forty-plus player who trades on his money to keep young girls around him. I think it might be time for me to find out if I can be the king my father would have wanted me to be.”

It was all she needed to hear. If he wanted to try, she was ready. Despite his reputation, she’d fallen right back into a peaceful friendship with him. He’d been the old Kash, supporting her when she needed it. He’d asked her questions about her work with the Lexi Arranged Teaser 2.jpgeducation department and then gave her ideas on how to handle the parliament. He hadn’t told her what she should do. He’d suggested, debated.

“I think you’ll find me less averse to giving this marriage a real try than you think. I was planning on talking to you about using the Palm Ceremony to begin to explore what we could be as a couple.”

He frowned. “I’m not sure what that means. You want to talk? Or have counseling? Because that sounds terrible.”

“I was talking about sex, Kashmir. I thought we could use this time to see if we’re sexually compatible.”

He popped up out of his chair like an eager puppy. “Yes. I think that is a brilliant idea. We should start now. Don’t worry. I intend to be gentle with you.”

She didn’t move at all. “Like you are with your lovely flowers?”

“Women deserve a man’s care,” he said quietly. “Day, I can’t erase my past.”

“I don’t want you to.” He misunderstood her problems with his statement. “But I do need you to understand that I’m not one of those flowers. I’m not here to sit at your side and bat my eyelashes in the hopes that you’ll buy something for me. I don’t work like that. I don’t care about your money.”

“That is easy for you to say. You’re about to have access to all of it, aren’t you?”

He had a point. “Even if I wasn’t, that wouldn’t be why I would want you, Kash. Sit down. We have some things to talk about before we get started. Come here close to me.”

He moved to the chaise she was sitting on, lowering himself down with a sullen frown. “I knew there would be talking.”

She was fairly certain his lovely flowers did very little talking, but he would get used to it. “Why did you want me back then?”

“I liked you. I liked talking to you. I liked being around you. I rather liked who I was when I was around you.” His expression softened. “I don’t think you knew how alluring you were to someone like me. You didn’t understand how beautiful you were, so you didn’t use it against me. Most women do.”

“Well, that happens when you surround yourself with women who are mostly valued for their looks. I don’t blame them. They’ve been told their beauty is the only thing worthy about them. If you want to meet women who don’t feel that way, you should probably expand out of models and actresses.”

“Well, you would be surprised how many gorgeous, sexy physicists turn me down because I’m not smart enough for them.”

– REVIEW –

Fifteen years ago, two brilliant and attractive students are drawn to each other while studying at Oxford. Both are native to the wealthy island of Loa Mali. Kashmir (Kash) Kamdar is royalty — he is the spare to the heir of Loa Mali. The young woman he is drawn to — perhaps even bit in love with — is a commoner, Dayita (Day) Samar. Kash finds Day’s strong personality attractive, even alluring — he likes the way she takes control. Just as Kash is making his feelings towards Day know to her, fate intervenes and the two are abruptly and seemingly forever separated.

Fast forward to present time, Kash is now the ruling monarch of Loa Mali. His sudden rise to power fifteen years ago, coupled with insecurities, resentments and guilt have led him to live a life nothing short of debauchery. Kash has a worldwide reputation as a playboy extraordinaire  — this dude even has a YouTube channel featuring his sex tapes.

His mother, Queen Yasmine, has had enough, and uses her power as reigning queen to arrange a marriage for Kash. Utilizing the services of McKay-Taggart, the Queen literally has an outraged Kash dragged out of bed (where he’s been “entertaining” three ladies), and hauled back to Loa Mali for the wedding. Once back at Loa Mali palace, Kash is stunned to discover that his mother’s pick to be his bride is none other that his Oxford love, Dayita Samar.

Dayita Samar returned to Loa Mali ten years ago, and she is now the head of Loa Mali’s education department. Unlike Kash, Day is self-assured — she knows who she is, what her goals and needs are and how to get them. One of her needs is to dominate, and Day, using utmost discretion, has indulged her need for dominance in some of the most exclusive BDSM clubs in the world. But now facing an arranged marriage that will see her become queen of Loa Mali, will Day be forced to give up the BDSM part of her life, or is there another way to fulfill her needs? With Kash now as her husband, perhaps Day can revive the feelings she and Kash were just beginning to explore fifteen years ago. Can Day bring out the submissive in Kash, without destroying their chance for a happy marriage?

Arranged is book 13.5 in Lexi Blake’s wildly popular Masters and Mercenaries series, as well as being the latest offering from the good people at 1001 Dark Nights. It is a stand alone novella, and you do not have to be familiar with the Masters and Mercenaries series to enjoy this story. One of the fine talents of author Blake is her ability to introduce (or reintroduce) her secondary characters to readers while maintaining an even pace to the story. The McKay-Taggart presence plays a prominent role without diminishing or interrupting Arranged’s main plot, which is the angst-filled relationship between Kash and Day.

The D/s relationship with a female Domme is usually not my cup of tea, but I found myself curious as to how the author would write this scenario, given the rigid circumstances of the plot. Kudos to Lexi Blake, who manages to orchestrate a very fine, believable dance between Kash and Day — it works without feeling forced or unnatural. What minor issue I had with Arranged was that Kash seemed to be completely ignorant of the fact that Day had been back, living on Loa Mali (his island kingdom) for ten years, unaware of her somewhat prominent presence in the Malian nation. I’m chalking that one up to Kash’s major case of manwhore in oblivion syndrome.

Another one-click winner from Lexi Blake.

Release Day Review: Cara Dee’s Inappropriately Yours

I’m always on the lookout for new words from author Cara Dee. Her stories are full of the raw realities of life — the complexities of relationships, the need for comfort, the power of attraction. Cara’s writing is concise, her storytelling mesmerizing, and always, contains an underlying message about acceptance. Here’s a look at Cara Dee’s latest offering, Inappropriately Yours

34799046One novel…

This was a mistake. Flying all the way to Washington to see Dad’s old college friend, who has reluctantly offered to help me with my writing after the world tore my first novel to shreds…big, big mistake. One, Jack Grady is lethally handsome. Two, he doesn’t mince words, and he absolutely hates my novel. But here I am, and I’m his for the weekend. Maybe in more ways than one, which would be totally inappropriate. —Isla Roe.

…two love stories.

Shock can be good or bad. It can be a good shock to discover you’re going to be a father at eighteen. This isn’t that kind of shock. This is bad. Several weeks after she was supposed to return home, one justifiably infuriated father makes his way to northern Washington. That would be me. Checking in at Cedar Inn, I think of ways to confront Jack and Isla—until I spot a familiar face from my childhood on the other side of the desk. But it can’t be her, can it? My God, she’s beautiful. I wonder how she’d react if she knew I’ve written a book about her. —Aiden Roe.

(All Camassia Cove novels are standalone.)

– REVIEW –

“So Little Miss LA ventures up to Camassia. Girl must really wanna learn to be better.”

Jameson Grady to his brother, Jack Grady

Inappropriately Yours

Pg. 17

Part I

Isla Roe, daughter of celebrated novelist, Aiden Roe, is headed to Camassia Cove, Washington. Isla, trying to follow in her father’s footsteps, crashed and burned with her first publication. Devoted dad Aiden comes up with an idea — send Isla to be mentored by his old friend, Jack Grady. A noted freelance editor, Jack should be able to give Isla some valuable pointers.

Jack’s not too happy about having to tutor Aiden’s daughter — he has some memories of her as a child, but he owes Aiden so he agrees to host Isla for a weekend. The lovely Isla arrives and she is not what Jack expected. Isla’s grown up into a delectable young woman, having a charm all her own. Jack manages to tamp down his guilt-ridden fantasies regarding his old friend’s daughter, but Isla, with moves worthy of Nabokov’s Lolita, soon has Jack eating out of her, er, hand. Naughty things happen and when Isla doesn’t return to LA after a few weeks, suspicious father, Aiden, heads up to Camassia Cove to kick some ass.

Part II

Upon arriving in Camassia Cove, Aiden doesn’t immediately head to rescue his daughter from Jack — Isla is, after all, an adult, free to make her own choices. Instead, Aiden opts to hunker down at the Cedar Inn and do some reconnaissance before the big showdown. Aiden, a widower of many years, is stunned when he recognizes the Inn’s proprietor, Chloe Nolan. It seems fate has plans to rock Aiden Roe’s world in more ways than one.

Inappropriately Yours is the fourth offering in Cara Dee’s Camassia Cove series. It is a standalone book, and you absolutely do not have to have read any of the other novels in the series to appreciate this story. Told in two parts, each with alternating POV’s, author Dee serves up an endearing and entertaining story about love and lust — past, present and future. All four protagonists are easily relatable to the reader and are well crafted. Part I of Inappropriately Yours seamlessly flows into Part II, yet each part could stand on its own as a complete story.

The appeal of Cara Dee’s writing is in her talent to craft flawed characters who heroically face down the raw fears that we all harbor — awakening in us all the desire to thrive rather than survive. While maybe not as gritty as her other works, Inappropriately Yours sends the same message: love comes in many forms, and it’s all good.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve only had one goal: survival. It’s what I know. There is no future beyond making it through another night and getting my hands on as much money as possible, by any means necessary. Pride and dignity are things I can’t afford.

It’s been the worst year yet—and not because I live on the streets. That’s nothing compared to being separated from my little girl. But I do what I can, and I send any money I make for her care. I can only hope she remembers me. I’m past desperate, needing her to know how much I love her and that I’ve done everything in my power to make it back to her.

The day I stepped off the bus in Seattle, I saw him. Adrian appeared at a time I most needed a helping hand, and his habit of rescuing strays became my salvation. He gave me hope. He taught me to dream about something I’d never dared to wish for.

A home.

As a writer, I’m not finished until the men and women in my books come to life, until I can see them as real people, until I can connect with them. Which means I write what I want to read: everyday heroes and heroines who have the same struggles we all do. “Did you enjoy the dessert? They had been planning on serving crème brûlée, but I remembered you like gelato. Strawberry.”

She turned and Kash was standing in the doorway, the tie to his tuxedo undone and the first few buttons of his shirt open, showing off golden skin.

Oh, how the girls must swoon over that man.

Unfortunately for him, she was a woman and not a girl. She curtseyed, recalling her etiquette classes and going down deep, to show her respect for the crown. “I thank you, Your Majesty.”

“Come now, Day. I asked you not to call me that long ago, and now it appears there’s even less reason. We were friends then. We’re going to be husband and wife in a week. Shocking how quickly that woman can move when she wants to.”

He looked so composed, but she couldn’t forget that he’d only found out his mother was dying this afternoon. That was when she’d seen the real man. She’d interrupted them with her silly dress and she’d seen the shock and pain on Kash’s face before he’d smoothed it out and gone back to being the polite royal he’d become.

“Are you all right?” She asked the question for two reasons. First, she wanted to know the answer and second, to see if they really were still friends.

His lips curved up slightly. “I’m faring quite well. We Kamdars are made of sterner stuff than this. Did you enjoy the dinner?”

So, not so friendly he would talk about private things with her. It was good to know where they stood. They needed to have a long conversation about how this was going to work. They might be marrying to protect the Kamdar line and to give his mother some peace, but they needed a plan of action about how best to achieve their goals.

Partners. That was how she’d decided to look at this. They were partners. And if she ended up governing the kingdom while he was out fucking around with supermodels, she wouldn’t get her heart broken.

Just humiliated.

Yes, they needed a talk and perhaps a contract.

“I enjoyed the meal very much. The company left something to be desired, but I suspect I’ll get used to dining with windbag politicians.” She turned back to the balcony, leaning against it. The view from here was spectacular. Beyond that, it was soothing in a way.

“Yes, Mother told me they’re giving you trouble.” He joined her, leaning beside her, their bodies so close but not touching. “I’ll talk to them, ensure you have your funding.”

“Don’t. It can wait a few weeks. I need to go back to them and introduce myself as their new queen.” She wasn’t about to let them think she sent her husband in. If he behaved as he so often did, he wouldn’t be around much and it would be up to her to keep everyone in line.

“Is that why you agreed to this arrangement? Because you wanted power?”

“I agreed because I care about this country. I’ve spent the last ten years of my life working here and trying to ensure that our children get what they need to make it out in the world. I agreed because your mother is excellent at putting one in a corner. I agreed because someone has to and I wasn’t sure who you would bring home if given the chance.” She shuddered at the idea of some brainless model attempting to be a role model for Loa Malian girls.

“Ah, you don’t think I have good taste in women.”

“I think you have an unquenchable appetite for them, Your Majesty, and that is something we should talk about.”

“Ah, the wifely lectures begin,” he said with a sigh. “Please proceed. I’m anxious to get this over with so I can be properly chastened.”

“I only ask that you attempt some discretion, Kashmir. I don’t expect you to be faithful in any way, but I do expect you to not humiliate me.”

He turned, frowning a bit as though she’d surprised him. “You don’t expect me to be faithful?”

It was time for some honesty. “I don’t think you can be. How long have you kept a single woman? A month? Three?”

“Six,” he replied. “I was with Tasha Reynolds for six months before we went our separate ways.”

“And were you faithful to her?” She already knew the answer to that question.

“We had an agreement.” He frowned as though the conversation wasn’t going at all as he’d expected. “She was on set much of the time. She knew I had a highly stressful job, so she was understanding. I gave her the same options.”

“Excellent, then let’s be fair with each other. As long as we’re both discreet, this marriage of ours doesn’t have to mean the end of our lives.”

Review Blitz: The Player by K. Bromberg (Book 1 of The Player Duet)

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00074]Baseball has never been sexier in an all-new novel by New York Times Bestselling Author, K. Bromberg.

Easton Wylder is baseball royalty. The game is his life. His passion. His everything.

So, when an injury threatens to end Easton’s season early, the team calls in renowned physical therapist, Doc Dalton, to oversee his recovery. Except it’s not Doc who greets Easton for his first session, but rather, his daughter, Scout. She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.

Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.

And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to maintain the club’s best interest, in regards to whether he’s ready to play.

But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?

– REVIEW –

I’m not a huge fan of sports romances — I find them pretty predicable. In the case of a baseball romance, the usual plot involves a sassy jock, and an equally sassy baseball Annie, some locker room smack, and ultimately revolves around a pennant chase. That is not the case with The Player. Author K. Bromberg takes that trope and elevates it to the level of pure poetry.

Scout Dalton lives and breathes baseball. Daughter of the legendary physical therapist, Doc Dalton, the lovely Scout follows in her father’s footsteps, rehabbing injured players. Having learned from the best, Scout has gained a sterling reputation of her own in the league. When Doc can’t make the trip to Texas to aid the Austin Ace’s franchise player, Easton Wylder, regain his million dollar arm, Doc sends Scout in his place.

Like Scout Dalton, Easton Wylder was born into the world of baseball. Son of legendary Cal ”Iron Man” Wylder, the gifted and hunky Easton has become a mega star in the major leagues. Ever conscious of the long shadow cast by his father’s success in the game, Easton wants nothing more than to heal his arm and return to his team.

While Easton plays baseball, he’s not a playa. The same could be said of Scout — passionate about the game, Scout is no cleat chaser. Both Easton and Scout are people of goodwill, with noble hearts that have been forged by tragedy and loss. That they are instantly attracted to one another is no surprise, but what is beautiful about this story is how they bond with each other over their love of the game, love of their family, and, ultimately, the love they have for one another.

I could rave about K. Bromberg’s writing style, but allow it to speak for itself — here’s Scout, reflecting about a baseball field:

“And right now I’d challenge anyone who told me this diamond doesn’t sparkle as brightly as the rock you wear on your finger. With empty seats or with a sold-out crowd, this outshines jewelry any day.”

Kindle Loc. 1286 of 3982

And here’s a peek into Easton’s heart:

“Who needs grass that’s greener on the other side when you’re a huge fan of how green the grass is beneath your feet?”

Kindle Loc. 3858 of 3982

Bromberg’s characters have depth — they’re so well crafted. Even the secondary characters in this story are clearly written. The plot is solid and stunning — no filler, no wasted words. The reader experiences both the heart-lifting as well as the gut-punching events right along with the characters (no small feat in this reader’s book). My only complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger — a HUGE cliffhanger. Take it as a testament as to how much I loved The Player that, as soon as I finished it, I preordered the concluding story, The Catch.

K. Bromberg’s The Player is so much more than a sexy baseball romance — it’s an outstanding tale of adult people dealing with the curve balls thrown at them by life.

Provocative Final Border

Book one in the sexy and intense new White Lies duet by Lisa Renee Jones!

The moment I walked into Sonoma’s Reid Winter Winery and Vineyard and made eye contact with Faith Winter for the first time was one of those moments. Rogers, a hot-shot, self-made San Franciscan attorney, initially approaches Faith convinced she’s behind the suspicious deaths of both his father and her mother. His convictions are immediately cast into doubt as Faith triggers the über alpha male in Rogers to surface — this Tiger wants Faith in the worst way. And he needs her to be innocent of murder — but is she?

Faith Winters really doesn’t want to run the winery — she’s an artist and an accomplished one at that. Reid Winter Vineyard is heavily in debt, and Faith is doing all she can to keep her father’s vineyard from falling into foreclosure. When she and Nick hit it off immediately, Faith is forced to face the truth of her actions and desires. Can she trust a guy like Nick with her secrets, or is she headed for a huge fall?

Provocative is the first novel in author Lisa Renee Jones White Lies Duet.

First and foremost, this book ends with a huge cliffhanger — you will have to purchase the second half of the duet, Shameless, for any plot resolution. Is Provocative worth the read? Yes, if you are into a searing romance that revolves around intrigue and mystery, and is set against a backdrop of the exquisite Sonoma lifestyle. (Think Murder on The Orient Express meets Falcon Crest, with some sexy spanking tossed in for good measure.)

The story is a bit slow to start, but once in, author Jones excels at weaving a captivating tale. Told using alternate POV’s, Nick is well written as an alpha — strong in action, emotions — I connected with him immediately. I never fully grasped the character of Faith, perhaps because the reader isn’t meant to truly understand her motivations until the final reveal. We know both Nick and Faith are keeping secrets, but Faith’s character seemed a bit too elusive.

While the plot is intriguing, I found the pace of Provocative to be uneven. Secondary characters abound and it is difficult in some instances to justify the amount of plot spent on them against their import to the story (again, perhaps this plays out in Shameless).  Additionally, some of the dialogue between Nick and Faith seemed redundant — I think with some crisp editing, this story would have been an absolute dazzler.

As it is, Lisa Renee Jones’s Provocative is a  suspenseful, sexy tale —  lush on imagery and sure to captivate fans of romantic intrigue.

Provocative (White Lies Book One) by Lisa Renee Jones
Release Date:  April 18th
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Provocative Final Border

Book one in the sexy and intense new White Lies duet by Lisa Renee Jones!

There are those moments in life that are provocative in their very existences, that embed in our minds forever, and sometimes our very souls. They change us, mold us, maybe even save save us. But some are darker, dangerous. If we allow them to, they control us. Seduce us. Quite possibly even destroy us.

The moment I walked into Sonoma’s Reid Winter Winery and Vineyard and made eye contact with Faith Winter for the first time was one of those moments. Provocative because I know at least one of her secrets, of which, I suspect she has many. Provocative because she believes I was a stranger to her when we met, but I am not. Provocative because I sought her out, with no intention of touching her. But now I have. Now I want her. Now I have to have her. But that changes nothing. It doesn’t change why I came for her.

CHAPTER ONE

Sam

I wake with a start, sitting straight up in my bed. Cool air fills my lungs when I gasp, pulling a deep breath in. My eyes slowly adjust to the dark room, and I rub the sweat from my forehead before swinging my feet over the edge of the bed and resting my arms on my knees. The dream is always the same, the piercing pain of the bullets hitting my flesh…and the fear of dying, scared and alone.

An exaggerated huff leaves my mouth when I see the alarm clock on the bedside table. It reads four-ten in the morning. That puts three hours and twenty minutes of sleep under my belt. It’s the longest I’ve slept since I arrived in Los Angeles three days ago.

I’m used to surviving on very little sleep, but the nightmares of that night are back and making it more difficult to find rest. I push myself out of bed and throw on a pair of athletic shorts and t-shirt. Grabbing my phone and hotel room key, I head to the gym. With no one else up this early, I play music directly from my phone while watching CNN with subtitles as I get my daily seven-mile run in.

I like running outdoors better, but it’s easier to use the gym and treadmill here at the hotel. My phone pings with incoming texts, but I focus on my run. The burn in my lungs relieves the stress in my shoulders. Sweat coats my skin and drips from my nose as I increase my speed—pushing myself harder. The treadmill roars as I increase the speed yet again, and my heart pounds wildly against my ribcage as my lungs fight for air.

Pain—it’s the only way I know I’m alive.

Pain in my chest. My mind. My body.

The treadmill slows just as my phone pings again, multiple times, alerting me to more incoming text messages—messages that I ignore. I’ve got three days’ worth waiting for a response, and I’m in no hurry to get to them. Transferring to the ATF offices in Los Angeles makes for an easy reason to avoid everyone and everything. Avoidance is what I do best.

I grab a bottle of water and return to my room for a shower before heading into my new office. New office. New job. New city. New state. New life.

A chance to start over. A chance to leave the past where it belongs…in the past. I pull a suit out of the closet and turn on the shower to let the water warm up.

Raking my hands over my face, I do my best to shove the events of last year to the back of my mind, but the life goes out of my eyes when I see the scars scattered across my chest. They’re a constant reminder of the day I lost almost everything…including my life.

Standing in front of the mirror, I run my hand up over my chest and shoulder, my fingertips brushing the smooth surface of the scars spread across the left side of my chest. I ball my hands tightly and release, repeating two more times, a coping mechanism my physical therapist taught me to deal with my anger.

I step into the shower and let the hot water ease my tension. My neck, shoulders, and back instantly begin to relax, and I allow my mind to let go at the same time. “New beginnings,” I mumble to myself as the shower cleanses me of my anger, a baptism of sorts.

I dress and am out the door in less than thirty minutes, easing my car onto the bumper-to-bumper packed L.A. freeway. A commute that would take me less than ten minutes in Phoenix takes me damn near forty-five. I find a covered parking spot just as my phone begins to ring. A number I don’t recognize flashes on the screen, and I decline the call. I don’t have the time nor patience to deal with unknown callers. Gathering my suit coat and phone, I find my way to the main entrance, using the security badge that was sent to me prior to my arrival to allow me entrance into the building.

My phone begins ringing again just as I’m weaving my way through the lobby and headed to the elevators. Same number. This time I press accept and answer. Before I even speak, the female voice on the other end catches me off guard.

“Oh my god, I didn’t expect you to answer.” She pauses. “I was leaving a voice mail and my call dropped so I was just calling back to finish the message.” I hear her sigh. “This is Kate Stevens. Nick Stevens sister. He gave me your number.” Nick Stevens, my new boss. “He mentioned that you might need a place to rent. I have a guesthouse he thought would be perfect for you, and he asked me to call you. I’m sorry if this caught you off guard. He said he was going to speak with you.” She finally stops speaking so I can get a word in.

“Hello, Kate. Nick didn’t mention this to me.”

I hear her sigh loudly. “He’s the most unorganized human being alive,” she mumbles, and I can’t help but chuckle. I’ve met the guy three times, and she’s right from my observation as well. “I’m so sorry to have called you,” she apologizes.

“Don’t be. I’d love to check out the place. I got here Friday, and I’ve been staying in a hotel while I look for something more permanent—”

“Don’t feel obligated,” she cuts me off.

“I don’t,” I answer her honestly. “I’m mainly looking for something not too far from the office and just somewhere to lay my head. Nothing fancy. I won’t be around much because all I ever do is work.”

“Sounds like Nick,” she says with a small laugh. “You’re welcome to check out the house anytime. It’s close to your office, but it’s a little off the beaten path near the foothills. Either call or text me, and we’ll schedule a time for you to stop by, or have Nick show it to you anytime. He knows where I hide the spare key. I’m also not home often so coordinating our schedules might be tough.”

I hear a horn honk in the background as she mutters a string of curse words worthy of an R-rating, and I can’t help but laugh. “That sounds great. Thanks for calling, Kate.”

She ends the call without another word, and I’m left standing in the lobby of my new office, laughing.

The morning is spent being briefed on projects that the team is working on and investigating. I’ll be taking over a case that my predecessor left when he was promoted to a position in Washington D.C., as well as anything new that comes in.

There’s a quick knock on my doorjamb before Nick sticks his head in my office. “You got any lunch plans?”

“Not today,” I toss over my shoulder as I close the folder on my desk.

“Let’s go grab a quick bite. I need to get the hell out of this office.” He loosens the tie around his neck. Nick is about my height and build, probably a few years older than me, California born and raised, and started in the San Diego field office. Worked his way up to Los Angeles and plans to retire here.

I grab my phone and slide it into the pocket of my suit jacket.

“How’s the first day treating you?” he asks as we weave through cubicles lining the rectangular office floor outside our offices.

“Good. Just briefing myself on the Navarro case.”

“We’ve been working on that for years,” he grumbles. “Hoping you can close the deal on that one.” His car beeps as we approach and he unlocks the doors. “Hey,” he buckles himself in and starts the car. “You do great work. I heard how you took down the Estrada cartel.” He slides his sunglasses on his face.

My heart races as I wonder how much he knows—if he’s aware the Estradas are my family. It was well known in the Phoenix office, but I’m not sure how much Los Angeles knows about my ‘family’ history. I nod but don’t say anything.

“You’re the best of the best, which is why you’re going to take down Navarro,” he continues as we take off down the road. “It was easy for me to approve the transfer request.”

“Thanks.” I offer a tight smile and turn to look out the passenger window.

“I’m excited for you to kick ass here in L.A. So why the hell did you want to leave Phoenix anyway? There’s so much shit going on in that office, you must’ve had years of work still.”

I blow a puff of air from my mouth. “My injuries—”

“Shit, I forgot about that. Sorry, continue.” He winces as I continue.

“My injuries fully healed with time and physical therapy, and I wrapped up the cases I was working on.” I look at him out of the corner of my eye to gauge his response. He raps his thumb against the steering wheel and nods his head slowly. “And it just felt like it was a good time to start fresh. Start over with a clean slate.”

He turns his head to look at me. “I cannot tell you how lucky we are to have you here in Los Angeles. I hope you’re fully prepared to kick ass and take names.”

I can’t help but smile, appreciating the vote of confidence.

***

As the day winds down and the office empties, I find myself wrapped up in the case file on my desk, familiarizing myself with all the key players, the locations where the guns are being held, and the evidence that we have to date, along with notes on what we still need to document.

Nick doesn’t knock when he enters my office this time, rather throwing himself into the chair across my desk with an exaggerated sigh.

“What’s the sigh for?” I ask him as I tuck the case file into my bag. I’ll finish combing through the remaining details tonight and make my own notes. I have a system for how I set up my case folders, and I need to rework all of these.

“Just a Monday,” he states, looking around my bare office. “You going to decorate or something? Throw a poster on the wall?” He waves his hand around, gesturing to the stark gray walls.

“Decorate? No. I do have some awards and diplomas I’ll hang once they arrive. They’re being sent from Phoenix.”

He nods, content with that answer.

I clear my throat. “Speaking of decorating, I got a call from Kate.” I raise my eyebrows and sit back in my desk chair. “She said something about having a guesthouse to rent. Were you going to tell me she was going to call?”

“I did. I sent you a text on Saturday.” He relaxes in his chair and props a foot on his opposite knee.  I really need to stop ignoring my messages. He continues, “I stopped by to see her this weekend and forgot she had that guesthouse. Immediately thought of you when I saw it.”

“Thanks. I need to find some time to check it out. Living out of a hotel room is less than ideal.” I reach over and power down my laptop.

“Let’s go now. It’s just down the road a few miles. I know where she keeps the spare key if she’s not there.”

“She also mentioned that,” I laugh.

“Grab your shit and let’s go. You can follow me there.” He jumps up from the chair and quickly pulls his tie off. Nick looks more like an outdoorsman than a senior agent with the ATF. He looks uncomfortable in a suit. I see him more as the park ranger type, running around in cargos and hiking boots.

I follow suit, loosening my tie as I follow him to our cars.

A few miles is more like fifteen, and about half of those miles are in bumper-to-bumper L.A. traffic. Something that I’m not sure I’ll ever adjust to. Once we exit the freeway, we wind through gorgeous neighborhoods all the way back to the base of the foothills. I would never in a million years guess the house we pull up to is a house in a suburb of Los Angeles. It sits on what I assume is about an acre of lush green land with neighbors spread out down a long secluded, tree-lined street. The ranch style house is simple yet modern with an updated exterior, wood shutters, and wrought iron accessories.

“Not a bad drive, eh,” Nick says as we both step out of our cars in the driveway. “I should say for L.A. standards. If your commute is under an hour, you’re pretty much living the life,” he laughs.

It really wasn’t a bad commute. I eyeball the watch on my wrist and the drive was just under thirty minutes. Nick reaches inside a hanging planter that swings from the covered front porch and pulls out a key. He waves me toward the side of the house where a brick sidewalk snakes around to the guesthouse that sits just off the main house. It looks exactly like the main house, just slightly smaller.

“This is it,” he says, sliding the key into the front door. “One bedroom, a small office slash library, kitchen, living room, and one and a half baths.”

We step inside. It’s obviously been remodeled recently. The smell of fresh paint hits me as I walk deeper into the house. Everything is brand new, sleek, and modern. Bright white trim and doors offset light gray walls. A dark wood floor makes the bright white kitchen pop against the stainless steel appliances.

“The only thing that’s missing is a washer and dryer. She said she’d order those once she leased the house. The laundry room is off the back.” He points to a door off the kitchen. “It’s a large pantry and a laundry room.”

I’m impressed with what I’ve seen thus far. I walk through the open living room and down the hall to the bedroom. It’s large and bright with one wall of windows that start near the ceiling and stretch about three quarters of the way down the wall. Long, dark gray curtains hang to each side of the paneled windows that overlooks more of the lush backyard. There’s a single French door that leads to a small brick patio off the master bedroom, and a table and chairs sit out there. In the middle of the table is a fire pit. I instantly imagine myself relaxing around this table with a beer after a long day at the office.

I head back down the hallway where I stop and peek my head in the office. It’s got two glass French doors that lead into the square room. One entire wall has built in bookshelves and a built in desk. It’s the perfect home office.

I scan the living room and kitchen again and make note that my dark furniture will fit perfectly in the space and complements the gray and white theme throughout. This might be the easiest decision I’ve made since deciding to move to Los Angeles.

Nick steps out front while I take one last look around, making mental notes of the space and things I’ll need shipped from Phoenix.

After we step outside and Nick locks the door, I hear him shuffling behind me on the brick walkway. “So what do you think?”

“Perfect. It’s everything I was looking for,” I say as I spin around and am met face-to-face with the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. I stumble momentarily because, for half a second, those words mean so much more than just the house I was looking at.

“I’m Kate,” she says, her voice strong and secure. She holds her hand out to shake mine. She’s tall with light brown hair that hangs just past her shoulders, and she’s wearing a navy blue dress and heels that put her at almost my six-foot-two. Confident. She’s confident. I can read a woman by the way she carries herself, the tone of her voice, and what she wears.

I take her hand in mine and smile. “Sam. Sam Cortez. I’ll take it.” Again, those words mean so much more than just the house.

Her lips turn into a half smile, and she holds eye contact with me. She licks her lips and tilts her head before glancing over to Nick and then back to me. “Nice to meet you, Sam Cortez. Welcome home.”

And my heart begins to beat again for the first time in eighteen months.

Hot Addiction - About the book

HotAddiction_800x1200 First glance into Hot Addiction by Lynn Raye Harris.

Five years ago…

Dexter Davidson checked his watch for the thousandth time that morning. It was nearing noon and his bride-to-be was over an hour late. His father stood in the chancel, his rented tuxedo making him appear distinguished and genteel rather than rough and worn like the farmer he was. But the look on his face was what killed Dex the most. It was one of pity and a growing resignation.

“Fuck this,” Dex growled as he clenched his jaw tight and walked down the aisle, between the rows of pews where the guests waited for the ceremony to start. The chapel doors were open to the outside because it was springtime and warm. But it was also raining. A soft, gentle rain, but rain nonetheless.

Perhaps the rain had caused a delay. Dex stood in the open door and took his phone from his pocket. Annabelle still hadn’t answered his texts. He sent another one, just in case, and felt his heart shrivel just a little bit more when no answer came.

He tried calling but it went to voicemail without even ringing. “Belle,” he said, his throat tight and his eyes stinging, “where are you, baby? I’m worried. Please let me know you’re safe. If you’ve changed your mind, it’s okay. Just let me know.”

It wasn’t okay if she’d changed her mind, but what else could he say? Annabelle Quinn had been his girl for the past four years. He’d fallen madly in love with her in an instant. He’d known her most of his life, had ignored her for much of it because she was his little sister’s best friend, but one day, pow!, she’d smiled at him the way she had a million times before—and he was done for. He’d been hers from that moment forward.

And now they were supposed to be getting married. He’d come home on leave from the Army at Christmas and asked her to marry him. She’d said yes. She and his sister had planned everything while he went back to Afghanistan and did his best to stay alive. He didn’t know how long he stood there before he felt a presence beside him.

“I’m sorry, Dex.” Katie put a hand on his arm. “She’s not coming.”

Belle, unaware of her abusive husband’s treachery, discovers the depths of Eric’s shady dealings when she receives a phone call informing her she’ll be dead within twenty-four hours unless she returns the millions Eric scammed.

Dex, a member of the Alpha Squad of an elite black-ops counterterrorism team known as the Hostile Operations Team (HOT), discovers that Belle is indeed an innocent victim caught up in a web of international intrigue. The HOT operative steps up to help his ex with a silent vow to himself that Belle won’t get a second chance to rip his heart in two. But before Dex has the chance to steel that wounded heart, Belle receives a nightmarish call informing her that her daughter is being held hostage. Four year old Charlotte, her babysitter along with the babysitter’s daughter are at the mercy of ex-KGB operative Dimitri Leonov.  Their fate hangs on Belle’s ability to discover the location of the millions of dollars Eric stashed into a secret bank account. As they frantically race to save the hostages from Leonov, Dex and Belle are forced to face the painful and surprising truths that have defined the past five years of their lives.

Hot Addiction is the latest installment in author Lynn Raye Harris’ wildly successful Hostile Operations Team series, and boy, what a book to pop my HOT cherry!  A stand alone novel, Hot Addiction is the tenth offering in HOT series, but you do not have to be familiar with the series to fully enjoy this book.

Written with an urgency that will keep the reader glued to the page, author Harris weaves a dramatic plot full of desire, espionage and intrigue. Dex and Belle are solid and sympathetic characters, and their chemistry rings true and unforced. The plot, while intricate, does not confuse. While the pacing of the story is set at a breathless and often breakneck speed, it still maintains a very even flow. (Major kudos to Harris as this story evolves over a timeframe of only a few days.) Secondary characters from the HOT series appear, and add rather than detract from the plot. Minor storylines are teased, as is par for a series, but the major storyline is absolutely solid and well-crafted.

An action-packed thriller wrapped around the hazy steam of a second chance romance, Hot Addiction is a terrific read. Well done, Lynn Raye Harris!

Maybe I should have done my homework first.
