Return to New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian’s “addictively readable” (Chicago Tribune) Midnight Breed vampire romance series with a pulse-pounding novella of paranormal seduction and dangerous thrills, where an icy immortal beauty and a lethal Gen One Hunter must confront a powerful enemy while struggling to deny the irresistible calling of their blood.

“Those men. Is that what they were—drug dealers?”

He stared at her. “You don’t need to know anything more than what I told the cops, Sia. Do us both a favor and leave it at that.”

“They were searching for something, Trygg.”

“So you mentioned.”

“Do the police have any idea what it might be?”

“I didn’t tell them that part.”

Sia gaped. “Why not? Rosa was killed for whatever it was they thought she had. If telling the police about it will help them understand what kind of trouble she was in—”

“The police can’t help.” Trygg blew out an impatient curse. “And whatever those men wanted from the woman doesn’t matter now.”

“It matters to me,” she insisted.

His dark eyes narrowed and he gave a stiff shake of his head. “This conversation is over. I told you, what happened here is the Order’s business. Go back inside and get some rest. Forget about tonight.”

She scoffed. “Forget it?”

When he started to move around her, Sia grabbed his arm. Warm, hard muscle clenched beneath her fingertips, sending a shocking heat through her body. She drew her hand away at once, trying to ignore the distressing awareness she felt for a man who infuriated her more and more the longer she knew him.

“You think I will ever forget what I saw tonight? A young woman was murdered, Trygg. A woman I liked. A woman I was responsible for keeping safe. And now an innocent little baby is without her mother. Maybe that’s something your cold-hearted kind can simply dismiss, but don’t expect me to do the same.”

“Yes, Tamisia. That’s exactly what I expect.” He scowled now, his scarred, sinister face taut with growing irritation and something more difficult to define. “In fact, I’m fucking demanding it. You do not want to be involved in this. So stow your questions and march your fine ass back into that house and stay there.”

“Love was treacherous. It was as cruel a master as the one he’d spent the first part of his life enslaved to . . . He swore he’d never put himself in those shackles again.”

Vampire Trygg knows all about the evil creatures wreak upon one another. Raised in captivity, Trygg was subject to unspeakable abuse at the hands of the madman, Dragos. Upon his freedom, Trygg, a trained assassin, finds himself a member of the Order — a vampire society based in Rome. There he finds purpose in life as a warrior commanded to aid in keeping the newly found peace between the Atlanteans and the Order.  Charged with escorting a banished Atlantean, Tamisia (Sia) from her homeland to Rome, Trygg refuses to recognize the instant attraction between them.

Sia, an outcast from her beloved Atlantea, wants nothing more than to redeem herself to her people and return home. She finds purpose working with a fellow Atlantean, Phedra. Together they run a shelter that provides a safe haven for abused women and children.

Phedra, unlike Sia, chooses to live in Rome; she can return to her colony should she ever decide to change her mind about her purpose in Rome. A crystal on Phedra’s bracelet enables her to be wherever her heart deems. All she need do is to focus upon the stone.

When the shelter comes under attack, Trygg and Sia come face-to-face with one another and their attraction cannot be denied. After a night of passion, Trygg decides to move one — but can he?

Sia continues to work towards returning to her colony. Phedra, seeing her friend in distress, offers Sia the chance to return to Atlantea by handing over the crystal to her.

When Trygg is ambushed, Sia has to make the choice between returning to her homeland of Atlantea or rescuing Trygg. The answer seems to be crystal clear — or does it?

Lara Adrian’s Midnight Unleashed is her latest offering in her hugely successful Midnight Breed series and novella 17 in this season’s 1001 Dark Nights series. It’s a short, entertaining read, filled with fascinating characters from the series, but I stress that you do not have to be familiar with the series to appreciate this story. As a matter of fact, Midnight Unleashed is the perfect story to introduce the series to a new reader. Trygg and Did are clearly crafted, and the Midnight Breed universe is well delineated without being cumbersome. The romance between the two sparks, and the fact that the paranormal mingles with the supernatural makes for some very interesting reading. The plot flies along, and the writing is very tight.

Lara Adrian’s Midnight Unleashed is a must-read for the paranormal romantic — you will not be disappointed.
