– ABOUT PRINCE ROMAN –

Rules for my new job:
1) Do not have sex with a man in the office (again).
2) Do not break Rule #1

I’m playing it cool, clean, and professional…until I meet Roman Bianchi. He’s not an insecure nerd or an ego-hole like the other kings of Silicon Valley. He’s charming and handsome. He’s fun, funny, and smart.

He’s also in the office across the hall.

Two broken rules waiting to happen.
I can’t lose this job over some guy.
But Roman’s not just some guy. Under that suit and cocky smile, he’s a prince.

– EXCERPT –

She hurried down the hall as if she’d just dodged three painful minutes in my company.

I shook it off. What was the difference? What was I trying to do here? Get my ass fired? Get her fired? There were dozens of women I could take to bed and absolutely no reason to focus on the one who could make my life and my job miserable.

But that body. The way she walked. The swing of her black hair across her back.

A female voice came from behind me. “There are rumors about that one.”

It was Marie Siska. Founding partner at Siska + Welton. She was in her early fifties and had her brown hair up in a tidy twist. She was a former litigator who had argued in front of the Ninth and had a way of knowing the intricacies of every case we handled.

“What kind of rumors?”

“The unsubstantiated kind.”

She invited me into my own office and closed the door behind us. I sat in front of my own desk, in one of the two guest chairs.

Marie’s lavender pants suit was custom made and she never sat down. She put her hands on the back of the second guest chair, pulling herself up a little as if she wanted to look taller.

“Barney and I have made a decision about you.”

I tried to look completely calm, but there was a pretty good chance my face froze over in the attempt.

“Let’s hear it.”

“Alexander Burke and Neuronet are your catch. If you go, he goes with you. That’s a plus in the senior partner column.”

I’d played MMPORGs with Burke way back in the day. All the zombie shooting had paid off. He was also a great guy and a badass gamer.

“But we’re a recent contract,” she continued. “And it’s short term. He can cut us loose any time for another outside contractor or to keep it all in-house. It’s fine. It’s part of the business, but a long-term retainer could be big for us. One third of future billing.”

“And my name would be one third of the ones on the letterhead.”

She did something she never did. She sat down in front of me. “I’ve wanted to be a lawyer ever since I saw a Senate debate on C-SPAN. We’re a small, classy operation with a stellar reputation. Classy and stellar were the goal, but small wasn’t. We should be litigating in front of the Supreme Court, and the reason we’re not is because we have to scratch and claw every quarter. We can’t take the chances we need to. I have ten or fifteen more years of active participation in this business before I can’t keep up, and it’s coming at me fast. We’ve tried to grow and it’s never stuck. This is our chance to turn this firm into what I dreamed about when I was ten. You are our chance.”

“No pressure.”

– REVIEW –

“She was like an orange with a tough, attractive skin. Once peeled, she was soft, sticky, sweet.”

Roman Bianchi

Prince Roman

Kindle Loc. 931 of 1433

Well, that kind of characterization will get your juices flowing.

C. D. Reiss’s novella, Prince Roman, is a gem of sassy, sexy story.

Set in the high tech arena of Silicon Valley, the lovely Raven Crosby is a smart, savvy HR Executive who has a bad habit of, um, fraternizing with her fellow executives. She’s a sharp gal who realizes the need for non-harassment and equal pay policies in corporate America. Her talents, coupled with a need to for a stable environment (i.e., one excluding an ex-lover) find her accepting a similar executive position at another tech rival, Neuronet. What she doesn’t count on is the outside counsel brought in by her new employers to audit the new HR policy.

Enter hottie attorney, Roman Bianchi. He’s the full package, brains, looks, moves — rocking it all in suit and tie, all day, every day. Who could resist him — certainly not Raven. Roman takes a liking to Raven, and both take massive delight in, um, violating each other, not to mention the very policies they’re supposed to uphold.

C. D. Reiss’s Prince Roman is a very quick read and is brought to you by the folks at 1001 Dark Nights, ensuring the reader a quality story. I enjoyed the fast witty dialogue between Raven and Roman — it’s clever and well written. Once they meet, this story takes off in the best way. I found the technical jargon to be a bit distracting — it pulled me away from the plot a few times, but not enough to hinder my enjoyment of these two characters.

If you are a fan of C. D. Reiss, or you are familiar with her story, The King of Code, you will absolutely love Prince Roman.

– ABOUT C. D. REISS –

C.D. Reiss is a USA Today bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Review/Excerpt Tour: Hallow Be The Haunt by Heather Graham

From New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham, comes the sexy and suspenseful title…HALLOW BE THE HAUNT, a new novella in the A Krewe of Hunters series brought to you by 1001 Dark Nights! Grab your copy of this amazing novella today!

– ABOUT HALLOW BE THE HAUNT (A Krewe of Hunters Novella) –

Years ago, Jake Mallory fell in love all over again with Ashley Donegal–while he and the Krewe were investigating a murder that replicated a horrible Civil War death at her family’s Donegal Plantation.

Now, Ashley and Jake are back–planning for their wedding, which will take place the following month at Donegal Plantation, her beautiful old antebellum home.

But Halloween is approaching. And Ashley is haunted by a ghost warning her of deaths about to
come in the city of New Orleans, deaths caused by the same murderer who stole the life of the beautiful ghost haunting
her dreams, night after night.

At first, Jake is afraid that returning home has simply awakened some of the fear of the past . . . .

But as Ashley’s nightmares continue, a body count begins to accrue in the city . . . .

And it’s suddenly a race to stop a killer before Hallow’s Eve comes to a crashing end, with dozens more life at stake, not
to mention heart, soul, and life for Jake and Ashley themselves.

– EXCERPT –

A trio had come to stand near the stage, watching the players.

They weren’t witches.

They were clowns.

Evil clowns. Well, he thought, it was a party filled with musicians, artists, and writers. The attendees were definitely honoring beloved authors such as Anne Rice and Steven King. The clowns might have come right out of a novel.

They were moving toward a man dressed as King Henry VIII. There was something about their movement that caught his attention.

“Stay here,” Jake told Ashley.

He started their way, glad the gun in his holster was his own bureau-issued Glock and not the costume piece that had come with the outfit. His black cape covered the truth of it.

It wasn’t easy getting through the crowd.

Even as he neared them, the clowns had moved. One of them had seen him. And known. Known that he was coming for them.

The clowns turned and started heading out.

They’d be heading straight toward Ashley.

He changed his own pace. And as the clowns seemed to converge on Ashley, he shouted out. “FBI! Get down!”

His words were met with applause and laughter. It was, after all, a costume party.

The clowns were almost upon Ashley. They stopped. And they stared.

Something about her—or the costume she was wearing—had given them pause.

They broke apart—twenty feet from Ashley.

And began to run.

Jake went after them. Logic said he had to go after the closest, but even the closest was blocked by a throng of people.

Ashley was safe—from the clowns at least.

Jake burst out onto the street. “Where’d the clowns go?” he demanded of the bouncer.

“The clowns? Buddy, this place is full of clowns.”

He saw one down the street and ran. This clown stopped, terrified, as Jake reached him and caught him by the arm.

“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”

The clown was a young man—high school age. He was purely terrified, and seeing his face now and the makeup on it, Jake knew he hadn’t been one of the masked clowns that had drawn his attention inside.

Beaten, he determined to find his way back to Ashley as quickly as possible.

He needed to do three things. Get to Ashley. Find out just who the hell was wearing the Henry VIII costume. And figure out why in hell the clowns would have been after him.

– REVIEW –

Jake Mallory and Ashley Donegal are finally getting married, and what better place than Ashley’s ancestral home, Donegal Plantation. That scenario alone guarantees fans of Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series that Hallow Be The Haunt is going to be a tasty treat this Halloween, and Heather Graham doesn’t disappoint.

As Jake and Ashley arrive in New Orleans days before Halloween, in preparation for their early November wedding at the Plantation, a series of murders occur.

Ashley, in tune with the supernatural, is visited by a young woman’s ghost, pleading for help. Jake, investigating the murders, realizes that Ashley’s spectral visits by the murdered victim put her in imminent danger.

As the plantation opens for its annual Halloween Haunt, Jake finds himself in a race to save his fiancé from the hands of the serial killer.  But in order to save her, Jake has to wade through the masses of costumed partiers — all dressed to kill.

Hallow Be The Haunt is the latest offering from Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series and is brought to you by the good people of 1,001 Dark Nights. As a fan of the supernatural genre, you can’t ask for a better treat this Halloween. Filled with suspense, ghosts, gore, and all wrapped around a love story, author Graham delivers the well-written tale her fans have come to expect from her. – ABOUT MIDNIGHT UNLEASHED-

Return to New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian’s “addictively readable” (Chicago Tribune) Midnight Breed vampire romance series with a pulse-pounding novella of paranormal seduction and dangerous thrills, where an icy immortal beauty and a lethal Gen One Hunter must confront a powerful enemy while struggling to deny the irresistible calling of their blood.

“Those men. Is that what they were—drug dealers?”

He stared at her. “You don’t need to know anything more than what I told the cops, Sia. Do us both a favor and leave it at that.”

“They were searching for something, Trygg.”

“So you mentioned.”

“Do the police have any idea what it might be?”

“I didn’t tell them that part.”

Sia gaped. “Why not? Rosa was killed for whatever it was they thought she had. If telling the police about it will help them understand what kind of trouble she was in—”

“The police can’t help.” Trygg blew out an impatient curse. “And whatever those men wanted from the woman doesn’t matter now.”

“It matters to me,” she insisted.

His dark eyes narrowed and he gave a stiff shake of his head. “This conversation is over. I told you, what happened here is the Order’s business. Go back inside and get some rest. Forget about tonight.”

She scoffed. “Forget it?”

When he started to move around her, Sia grabbed his arm. Warm, hard muscle clenched beneath her fingertips, sending a shocking heat through her body. She drew her hand away at once, trying to ignore the distressing awareness she felt for a man who infuriated her more and more the longer she knew him.

“You think I will ever forget what I saw tonight? A young woman was murdered, Trygg. A woman I liked. A woman I was responsible for keeping safe. And now an innocent little baby is without her mother. Maybe that’s something your cold-hearted kind can simply dismiss, but don’t expect me to do the same.”

“Yes, Tamisia. That’s exactly what I expect.” He scowled now, his scarred, sinister face taut with growing irritation and something more difficult to define. “In fact, I’m fucking demanding it. You do not want to be involved in this. So stow your questions and march your fine ass back into that house and stay there.”

– REVIEW –

“Love was treacherous. It was as cruel a master as the one he’d spent the first part of his life enslaved to . . . He swore he’d never put himself in those shackles again.”

Trygg

Midnight Unleashed

Kindle Loc. 965 of 1845

Vampire Trygg knows all about the evil creatures wreak upon one another. Raised in captivity, Trygg was subject to unspeakable abuse at the hands of the madman, Dragos. Upon his freedom, Trygg, a trained assassin, finds himself a member of the Order — a vampire society based in Rome. There he finds purpose in life as a warrior commanded to aid in keeping the newly found peace between the Atlanteans and the Order.  Charged with escorting a banished Atlantean, Tamisia (Sia) from her homeland to Rome, Trygg refuses to recognize the instant attraction between them.

Sia, an outcast from her beloved Atlantea, wants nothing more than to redeem herself to her people and return home. She finds purpose working with a fellow Atlantean, Phedra. Together they run a shelter that provides a safe haven for abused women and children.

Phedra, unlike Sia, chooses to live in Rome; she can return to her colony should she ever decide to change her mind about her purpose in Rome. A crystal on Phedra’s bracelet enables her to be wherever her heart deems. All she need do is to focus upon the stone.

When the shelter comes under attack, Trygg and Sia come face-to-face with one another and their attraction cannot be denied. After a night of passion, Trygg decides to move one — but can he?

Sia continues to work towards returning to her colony. Phedra, seeing her friend in distress, offers Sia the chance to return to Atlantea by handing over the crystal to her.

When Trygg is ambushed, Sia has to make the choice between returning to her homeland of Atlantea or rescuing Trygg. The answer seems to be crystal clear — or does it?

Lara Adrian’s Midnight Unleashed is her latest offering in her hugely successful Midnight Breed series and novella 17 in this season’s 1001 Dark Nights series. It’s a short, entertaining read, filled with fascinating characters from the series, but I stress that you do not have to be familiar with the series to appreciate this story. As a matter of fact, Midnight Unleashed is the perfect story to introduce the series to a new reader. Trygg and Did are clearly crafted, and the Midnight Breed universe is well delineated without being cumbersome. The romance between the two sparks, and the fact that the paranormal mingles with the supernatural makes for some very interesting reading. The plot flies along, and the writing is very tight.

Lara Adrian’s Midnight Unleashed is a must-read for the paranormal romantic — you will not be disappointed.

– EXCERPT –

Sia had never seen anything as magnificent. Every inch of him was dense muscle and firm skin swirling with the strange, alien markings, these living, moving testaments of his need for her. Nothing at all like the sun-kissed, golden skin of her past lovers in the colony, including Elyon, whose fine-hewn physical perfection could have made the angels weep.

No, with his massive build and bulging muscles, Trygg looked more demon than angel. And her hungry eyes couldn’t get their fill of him.

“You’re glorious, Trygg.” She smoothed her fingers over his warm muscles and the stunning glyphs that were uniquely his own. “The most incredible man I’ve ever seen.”

His sensual mouth twisted at her praise, but this time he didn’t reject it. His breath sawed out of him, his fangs like pearly daggers as he gazed hungrily at her beneath him.

“Beautiful Sia,” he said, his hands roaming from her waist to the swell of her hip. Gripping her there, he dragged her against his groin, using his hold to crush their bodies more tightly together. “Have you ever been with a Breed before?”

Although phrased as a question, he meant it also as a warning. One that made her veins throb and the heat gathering in the center of her turn even more molten.

She shook her head. “I’ve never wanted to be. Now I can’t think of anything I’ve ever wanted more. Just you.”

With the press of his hard, thick arousal jutting against her, she moaned, suddenly desperate to get even closer. He leaned over her, tugging hard on her hair as he took her mouth again, his hold tilting her head back on her shoulders, baring her throat to him.

She could feel her pulse pounding there and froze, wondering if he wanted to sink his teeth into her flesh. Some wild, reckless part of her wanted him to. Dared him to. Anything to make this dark, needy pull inside her subside. But no, he only skimmed his lips over her skin, leaving a trail of flames in their wake as he moved lower.

Review: Tripped Out by Lorelei James

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Lorelei James, comes TRIPPED OUT, a new novella in her Blacktop Cowboys Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

– ABOUT TRIPPED OUT –

Where there’s smoke…

Stirling Gradsky abandoned the corporate rat race for a more laidback lifestyle. So it’s ironic she’s stuck working with a hard-bodied, know-it-all scientist who treats her like a stoner instead of a stone cold business woman capable of running a large scale cannabis operation. Dr. Hot and Tattooed with the big…brain needs to stop sampling their product; he’s under the half-baked idea that he’s the boss.

Dr. Liam Argent’s doctorate isn’t in chemistry, but from the moment he meets his sexy new coworker, there’s enough heat between them to short out all the lights in the grow house. First item on his agenda? Clearing up the sassy, blunt blonde’s hazy notion that she’s in charge.

Sparks fly as their attraction blazes. But can they weed out their differences without getting burned?

– EXCERPT –

The first rule of being a prankster?

A killer poker face.

And StirlingGradsky had that down pat.

The second rule of being a prankster?

Learn your opponent’s weak spots.

Maybe Stirling didn’t have that rule down entirely. Her pranking prey, Dr. Liam Argent, remained as much a mystery now as he’d been when he’d waltzed into High Society ten months ago and declared himself emperor.

Okay, maybe not emperor, but he definitely acted like the laboratory was his private kingdom.

His appearance hadn’t been a surprise. Stirling’s brother Macon, her business partner in High Society—a cannabis operation that included a retail store, a medical dispensary, and an onsite grow house—had informed her that he’d hired a guy from California, a cannabis expert, to work in the lab.

After dealing in euphemisms regarding all things cannabis related, Stirling believed “the lab” was Macon’s shorthand for the grow house. She imagined the California dude to be an older version of the iconic stoner character Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Turned out she had been wrong on both accounts.

Macon had indeed meant he’d created a full-blown, state of the art laboratory, complete with a beefed up security system for their resident cannabis expert. And the “dude from California” turned out to be Dr. Liam Argent, stuffed shirt extraordinaire, with advanced degrees up the wazoo.

The man drove her crazy.

Crazy.

From day one he’d refused to tell her what he was working on in his fancy-ass lab. When she’d complained to Macon about Dr. Argent’s secretive manner, he’d instructed her to leave Dr. Argent alone.

Her brother may as well have waved a red flag in front of her.

She’d tried being friendly…to no avail.

She’d tried being bossy…to no avail.

She’d tried every “employee relations improvement” tactic she’d learned in her years in the corporate world…to no avail.

Hence her oh-so-mature decision to prank him until he cracked. She’d worked with men like him before. At least if you got them angry enough, they’d yell at you, which nine times out of ten led to an actual conversation.

Except Dr. Argent hadn’t shown the slightest chink in his armor. In fact, he’d joined in on her prankfest and one-upped her on occasion.

Which was why today’s prank ranked as one of the better ones he’d pulled on her.

It was also why Stirling was massively annoyed.

– REVIEW –

“But . . . you’ve always acted like I’m beneath you.”

“I’ve always wanted you beneath me.”

Stirling and Liam

Tripped Out

Kindle Loc. 1177 of 3045

(Pops open a can of Cannabis Cola . . . ) Gentle Readers: if you’re looking for a smart, snarky romantic read, full of delicious banter, look no further. Lorelei James has hit Colombian Gold with her latest Blacktop Cowboys novella, Tripped Out.

Although Dr. Liam Argent and Stirling Gradsky hail from very different backgrounds, they actually have quite a bit in common. They’re both smart, well-educated and have been seriously burned in the love department.

Liam has been hired by Stirling’s brother, Macon, to head up the research department of High Society, Macon’s pot growing operation in Colorado. Macon may own the company, but it’s his sister, Stirling, who runs the operation.

Liam and Stirling lock horns immediately, and the pranks the two pull on one another are brilliant, each more devious than the last one. As the pranking between these two escalates, so does the sexual tension and it’s only a matter of time before Dr. Dickhead and Miss Dreadlocks and Multiple Piercings are professing their love for each other through a cloud of High Society’s finest ganja gold.

Tripped Out is a well-written, fast-paced trip. The characters are likable, the dialogue smart, sassy and full of truly classic innuendo. Particularly pleasing to this reader was the angst-free burn between Liam and Stirling. From the start, these two know where they’re headed; it only makes their journey more satisfying.

If you’re a fan of author James’ Blacktop Cowboy series, or a devotee of the 1001 Dark Night Series, you’ve already taken a hit off this spectacular story. If you’re unfamiliar with Lorelei James, treat yourself to Tripped Out. Just make sure you have lots of munchies on hand . . .

EASY FOR KEEPS: A Boudreaux Novella by Kristen Proby

Adam Spencer loves women. He’s comfortable with his lifestyle and sees no reason to change it. Sarah Cox has just moved to New Orleans, having accepted a position as a social worker. It’s a demanding, sometimes dangerous job, but Sarah can handle just about anything that comes at her, even the attentions of one sexy Adam Spencer. But the more time she spends with the enchanting man, the more he begins to sway her into believing in forever.

– REVIEW –

Adam Spencer is co-owner of The Odyssey, a bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans.  Handsome, and a genuinely nice (and horny) guy, Adam is a confirmed bachelor. Although he loves the ladies and they love him back, Adam has never had the urge to marry and have a family. That is until he has an encounter with a little lady named Hailey.

Hailey is the five-year old daughter of Sarah Cox. The widow of a Miami police officer, Sarah has moved to the Big Easy looking for a new start for both Hailey and herself.  It’s been three and a half years since her husband, Kurt, was gunned down in the line of duty.  Sarah has finally accepted that life moves on, and she should, too.

Fate steps in and Sarah and Adam meet when Hailey gets lost in a grocery store.  It’s Adam who finds the little girl and returns Hailey to her frantic mother, Sarah.

Sarah is initially leery of Adam’s kindness towards her — she’s all too aware that danger comes in many guises. As a social worker assigned to protective services aiding batter women, Sarah is ever vigilant. But once outside the grocery store, Sarah discovers her car won’t start and she’s forced to rely on the kindness of Adam.

While her car battery may be dead, Sarah finds she isn’t anymore. Delighted, Adam is more than willing to give the lovely Sarah’s equipment a boost wherever and whenever she needs it. Some seriously sexy sparks fly between these two and it isn’t long before both Adam and Sarah are overheating in unison.

Sarah’s social work keeps her in the line of danger and after a particularly close call, both Adam and Sarah recognize that what they have together, with Hailey, is a bright future.

Kristen Proby’s Easy for Keeps is Book 4.5 of her highly successful Boudreaux Series and the ninth novella of the 1001 Dark Nights Collection Three.

A well-written novella with great character development, Easy for Keeps is more than just a short steamy read. The subplot concerning spousal abuse is both horrific and informative, clearly timely, and not to be taken lightly. That author Proby has capably incorporated such serious subject matter into a short tale that’s meant to titillate rather than educate exemplifies her talent as a writer. Well done, Kristen Proby, well done.

UNCHAINED: An Eternal Guardians Novella by Elisabeth Naughton

For thousands of years, Prometheus’s only certainty was his daily torture at Zeus’s hand. Now, unchained by the Eternal Guardians, he spends his days in solitude, trying to forget the past. He’s vowed no allegiance in the war between mortal and immortal, but when a beautiful maiden seeks him out and begs for his help, he’s once again powerless to say no. Soon, Prometheus is drawn into the very conflict he swore to avoid.

– REVIEW –

Prometheus is playing with fire — again.

(A little backstory: Prometheus, a Titan, angered the God Zeus by giving the gift of fire to mankind.  The infuriated and vengeful Zeus had Prometheus chained to a large boulder, where, for eternity, the Titan’s liver (yes, that’s liver, not lover) was to be eaten daily by an eagle. As an immortal, Prometheus was doomed to regenerate any injury to his body, so by night he would heal, by day he would be devoured anew. Prometheus escaped this damnation when he was rescued by the Argonauts.)

Present day —

Prometheus lives a life of solitude in a castle high on Mt. Parnithia — a castle once belonging to a dark sorcerer. When Prometheus begins to hear a beguiling feminine voice calling out to him, he thinks it to be a hallucination or perhaps the remnants of some dark magic left over from the former tenant.

Unable to resist the call of the female, Prometheus soon comes to realize that the voice is real, and its owner has a power over him that he cannot and does not want to resist. He seeks out the source of that siren’s call and discovers it belongs to a beautiful witch who calls herself Keia. Prometheus is immediately taken with the sorceress and his feelings for her reawaken the life force in him.

Keia is actually Circe, the most powerful witch in the cosmos, and Circe has an agenda. Like Prometheus, Circe has angered Zeus and her punishment is imprisonment in a cave on Mt. Olympus. Zeus, being Zeus, is not a “forgive and forget” type of God — everything has its price.  In Circe’s case, Zeus demands that in exchange for her freedom, Circe has to discover the location of the fourth and final element needed to complete the all-powerful Orb of Kronós. With the intact Orb of Kronós, Zeus will reign eternally over all realms and worlds. There exists only one person who knows exactly where that fourth element resides — Prometheus.

Circe sets about casting her spells to seduce the half-mad Prometheus, but soon realizes that Prometheus has cast the spell of love upon her. The attraction between Prometheus and Circe ignites into a consuming flame. Passionate embraces in an enchanted location, a capture, and more grotesque torture finally lead the lovers to a final confrontation on Mt. Olympus with the crazed Zeus. Back out come the chains, but for whom?

Unchained by Elisabeth Naughton is the latest offering in the 1001 Dark Night Series. A stand alone novella in Naughton’s successful Eternal Guardians Series, Unchained is an urgent, sensual love story filled with all the captivating fantasy and magic that could only arise from the ancient mythologies.  Author Naughton weaves her story, set in present time, around characters that grab the reader instantly. Prometheus, Circe and Zeus are so well written — a novella doesn’t seem to do them justice. Perhaps Circe will continue her whispering into the author’s ear . . . .

HARD TO SERVE: A Hard Ink Novella by Laura Kaye

When Internal Affairs investigates Detective Kyler Vance as part of the new police commissioner’s bid to oust corruption, everything is on the line. Mia Breslin’s career is golden. Now if only she could find a man to dominate her nights and set her body—and her heart—on fire. When a scorching scene with a hard-bodied, brooding Dom at Blasphemy promises just that, Mia is lured to serve Kyler again and again.

– REVIEW –

Author Laura Kaye continues her Valentine to the heroes and heroines of Baltimore in her latest offering, Hard to Serve. In a seamless segue from her Hard Ink Series, she sets the scene for her new BDSM series, Blasphemy. Be ready to be grabbed by the throat . . . .

Detective Kyler Vance is restless and edgy. He’s been on desk assignment for weeks since suffering an injury during the gang war that took the life of his godfather. He needs relief, and soon. As one of the owners of the exclusive BDSM club Blasphemy, Kyler (or as he’s known at Blasphemy, Master Kyler) heads out to check in on the action at the club.

Enter Mia Breslin.  New to Baltimore, Mia, a submissive, is in the throes of opening her first art gallery. Prior to her move to Charm City, Mia did some research into Baltimore’s BDSM scene and now holds a probationary membership in Blasphemy. The stress from work leads her out to seek some relief at the club.

Kyler spots Mia on a security monitor at the club, and is immediately taken with her — call it Alpha male insta-lust. When the two finally make contact, the chemistry is hot and palpable. (Author Kaye’s keyboard must have melted when she wrote the scenes between these two — the action between these characters is absolutely scorching.)

While Kyler and Mia play at Blasphemy, life outside of the club continues to be complicated. When their paths inevitably cross in real life, both Mia and Kyler are forced to confront the truths about themselves and their feelings for one another.

Hard to Serve is a stand alone novella, and the newest release in the 1001 Dark NightsSeries. It is the introductory story in Laura Kaye’s Blasphemy Series which will explore relationships within the BDSM community.  As such, Hard to Serve comes with a caution, as it contains themes that include breath play, as well as forced consent.

Very well written, the story focuses on the relationship between Kyler and Mia, and the scenes between the two at Blasphemy are very graphic, hard core and certainly fall under the heading of erotica. All of the characters, protagonists and ancillary, are well written. Familiar faces from the Hard Ink Series make cameo appearances but are not a distraction to the major plot.

One does not have to have read any of the Hard Ink Series to enjoy Hard to Serve and while there were instances where this reader had her heart in her throat, Hard to Serve also has this reader waiting with bated breath for more Blasphemy.

DRAGON FEVER: A Dark Kings Novella by Donna Grant

Rachel Marek intends to expose the truth about dragons to the world – and her target is within sight. Nothing matters but getting the truth, especially not the ruggedly handsome, roguishly thrilling Highlander who oozes danger and charm. Asher is more than just a man. He’s a Dragon King – a being who has roamed this planet since the beginning of time. With everything on the line, Asher must choose to trust an enemy in the form of an all too alluring woman whose tenacity and passion captivate him.

– REVIEW –

“This was their planet. From the dawn of time dragons have roamed this world, ruling all. They could’ve easily killed the humans when they appeared, but they hadn’t. The Kings made room for them.”

Dragon Fever

Kindle Loc. 373 of 2125

Dragon King Asher longs for his home, Dreagan, nested in the Scottish Highlands. Reluctantly, he finds himself in Paris attending the World Whiskey Consortium, representing Dreagan Industries. Dreagan Industries distills the finest Scottish whiskey (yes, whiskey) known to man.

Rachel Marek has made her name in investigative journalism.  When presented video evidence possibly exposing the existence of dragons on planet Earth, Rachel jumps at the chance to break this story to the public.  Knowing that there will be a representative from Dreagan Industries at the Consortium, Rachel heads to Paris.  Once there, Rachel goes undercover as Rae in hopes of collecting evidence supporting the video. Her plan is to seduce Asher.

Rachel is a pretty cool customer,  Confident of her skills as a reporter and as a woman, very little rocks Rachel’s boat — that is until she encounters Asher in the flesh.  Dragon King Asher is a glorious specimen to behold — dark haired, green-eyed, complete with a devastating burr — he’s irresistible.

Neither Asher nor Rachel can deny the combustion they feel for the other, and this leads to some very fevered, scorching times between the two. But the path of true love and soul mates between the mortal and immortal is never easy, and such is the case between Asher and Rachel.

So what’s it like getting it on with a dragon? Hot — verra, verra, hot!

Dragon Fever is the latest offering from the folks at 1001 Dark Nights, and book 9.5 in Donna Grant’s deliciously hot Dark Kings SeriesDragon Fever is a stand alone novella, and you do not have to be familiar with the series to enjoy this tasty tidbit. There is a little cliffie concerning the overall plot of the Dark King Series, but story featured in Dragon Fever is complete.

A confession: this reader was a bit skeptical concerning dragon/human erotica, but can now report that she happily popped that cherry while reading this book. If you’re a lover of paranormal/fantasy erotica, enter the realm of Dragon Fever. You won’t be disappointed.

BENEATH THESE SHADOWS by Meghan March

The only permanent thing in my life is the ink I put on my clients.
I drift from city to city, in and out of beds, from one tattoo shop to the next.

Until her.
She’s everything I’m not.
Full of fire and life. An innocent where I’m a sinner.
I want to consume her. Protect her. Keep her.
But first, I have to escape from beneath these shadows.

About the 1001 Dark Nights: Bundle Eleven Authors-

Kristen Proby was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.

Elisabeth Naughton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Elisabeth: “I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn’t have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn’t exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.

“Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

“My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier.

“I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.”

Review & Excerpt Tour: Blade by Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright

From New York Times Bestselling authors Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright, comes BLADE, a new novella in their Bayou Heat Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

– ABOUT BLADE

Sexy Suit, Blade was held captive and abused for decades. Benson Enterprises was desperate to use his superior blood to create super soldiers. But when he’s finally rescued, he can’t return to the Wildlands with the other prisoners. Not without the female he was forced to watch being impregnated. The female who has gone missing.

Beautiful and broken, Valli just wants to run away and never look back. But with the shocking news of her pregnancy fresh in her mind, she wonders if that’s even possible. Told by her captors that one of the caged animals assaulted her, she knows she must do everything in her power to keep her unborn child safe. But when a glorious male tracks her down and claims her and her baby as his own, will she have the strength to walk away?

– EXCERPT –

Blade didn’t miss her shudder of relief, the quick glimmer of tears in her eyes. Warmth filled his heart, and a rush of gratitude. Whatever her confused and angry feelings toward him, it was obvious she cared deeply about their child.

“Then why am I here?” she demanded, trying to sit up.

The Healer placed another pillow under her head so she could be slightly upright. “Blade was concerned when you fainted.”

“Blade?” She whirled back to study Blade with a skittish gaze. “That’s your name?”

His lips twisted into a humorless smile. “A little late for introductions, I know, but yes.” He nodded toward the male across the bed. “And that’s Jean-Baptiste. A Pantera healer. One of our best.”

She frowned. “I don’t get this. I thought there was nothing wrong with me. Why would I
need a healer?”

“I said nothing was physically wrong,” Jean-Baptiste clarified.

Her stunningly beautiful face tightened, as if she was offended by the words, her hand reaching up to brush away Jean-Baptiste’s hand.

“I’m not crazy,” she ground out.

“No one said you were,” Blade said, reaching to grasp her hand, which lay on top of the light blanket covering her body. Thankfully she made no effort to pull away from his grasp this time.

He hated it, but he needed to touch her.

To feel the heat of her skin and hear the steady beat of her heart.

“Then what are you saying?” she demanded, once again turning her attention to the Healer.

Jean-Baptiste chose his words with care. “I suspect that the doctors at the clinic used hypnosis to distort your memories.”

Valli flinched, her fear scenting the air. Blade’s cat pressed beneath his skin, wanting out. It didn’t understand human deceit or betrayal. It only knew that this female was afraid and in need of comfort.

“No,” she breathed. “You’re just trying to protect your friend after what he…” She didn’t finish.

This time it was Blade who pulled his hand from hers.

With a growl.

– REVIEW –

The Bayou Heat series is a paranormal shifter romance series set in the Wildlands — somewhere in the bayous of Louisiana. The Pantera, the inhabitants of the Wildlands, are puma shifters.  Once thought to be simply the stuff of legends and myth, discovery of the existence of the Pantera has caused them to be hunted to near extinction. The blood of a Pantera is magical, and is highly coveted by nefarious people who would destroy the entire Pantera population to achieve their evil goals.

Both Blade and Valli have been subject to medical experimentation at the hands of the villainous scientists of Benson Enterprises.  The stunning puma shifter, Blade, is tormented and held prisoner for years while his blood and semen are drawn from him. He agonizes as he helplessly watches a human female (Valli) forcibly impregnated with his seed. Shortly thereafter, both are rescued from their captors, but during their rescue, Blade loses track of the female, now carrying his cub.

The gorgeous Valli discovers that she has no safe haven. Pregnant and terrified, she’s stunned when Blade, her supposed rapist, comes to her aid. More stunning is the fact that Valli is drawn to Blade, sensing he’s more of a protector than a threat to her and their unborn cub. Valli struggles to reconcile her growing feelings for Blade against the dark memories of her imprisonment. And while Blade continues to fight for the love of his mate, Valli, he’s determined to eradicate the evil that still poses a threat to the Pantera.

Blade, co-authored by Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright, is novella 23 in the successful Bayou Heat series and the latest offering from the good people at 1001 Dark Nights. Blade is a quick, enjoyable read and you don’t have to be familiar with the series to appreciate this story. If you are already familiar with the Bayou Heat series, you know that it’s always a heated adventure with the pumas in their magical Wildlands. Blade and Valli’s love story is full of the same fast-paced, puma-purring action and steamy sexual heat fans of this series have come to expect.

Well-written paranormal romance at its best, Blade is the perfect catnip treat for fans of authors Ivy and Wright’s puma shifter universe.

– ABOUT THE AUTHORS –

ALEXANDRA IVY is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library.

Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

LAURA WRIGHT is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”

– ABOUT EYES ON YOU (Blasphemy 3) –

She wants to explore her true desires, and he wants to watch…

When a sexy stranger asks Wolf Henrikson to rescue her from a bad date, he never expected to want the woman for himself. But their playful conversation turns into a scorching one-night stand that reveals the shy beauty gets off on the idea of being seen, even if she’s a little scared of it, too. And Wolf loves to watch.

In the wake of discovering her fiancé’s infidelity, florist Olivia Foster never expected to find someone who not only understood her wildest, darkest fantasies, but would bring them to life. As Wolf introduces her to his world at the play club, Blasphemy, Liv finds herself tempted to explore submission and exhibitionism with the hard-bodied Dom even as she’s scared to trust again.

But Wolf is a master of getting what he wants—and he’s got his eyes set on her…

– REVIEW –

Here’s a short, delectable story from Laura Kaye, right in time for that quick beach read.

Wolf Henrikson, looking like a Norse god, is sitting alone at the bar one night. One of the Master Dominants of Blasphemy, Baltimore’s exclusive BDSM club, Wolf’s just been stood up by a prospective submissive. Don’t feel too bad for Wolf. At a table not far away, Olivia (Liv) Foster is attempting to be polite to her dinner date — the most obnoxious man ever put on the planet. Wolf can’t help but overhead the rude tirade throw by Liv’s date. Upon further inspection, Wolf gets an eyeful of the luscious Liv, who happens to be decked out in a red dress and black heels with ribbons around the ankles, no less. (Okay, we might have some Little Red Riding Hood going on here, but it’s so, so good — stick with me, people.)

Push comes to, ahem, shove, and before you know it, Wolf and Liv are back in his hotel room, acting out their fantasies up against a glass window for all to see. They’re a match made in BDSM heaven, as both enjoy the same kinks. But is role playing enough for either one, or are there deeper, lasting desires to fulfill?

Laura Kaye’s Eyes on You is book 3 of her fabulous Blasphemy series, and it’s not to be missed! Brought to you by the fine people at 1001 Dark Nights, Eyes on You is a very quick read, full of steamy sexy treats that surround a well-written story. Author Kaye sprinkles in characters from the Blasphemy series as needed, enriching the plot. The protagonists are very well written — Liv is a sweetheart, finally finding the courage to voice her needs. Wolf is the fantasy Dom come true — after all, he really knows how to take care of his sub:

“Wolf got her the ribeye”

Eyes on You

Kindle Loc. 501 of 1691

I loved Laura Kaye’s Eyes on You.  Her fans will too. If you’ve never read any of the Blasphemy series, I suggest this novella as an introduction into the sensual and erotic culture of Blasphemy. You will not be disappointed.

– EXCERPT –

The silence that followed was thick with tension, and Liv almost couldn’t decide if she’d hallucinated what’d happened or if this first date was truly just that bad. Jerry wouldn’t make eye contact and, instead, peered down at his cell phone beneath the table. So she took the opportunity to survey the diners sitting at the horseshoe-shaped bar near them in the hopes she’d see someone, anyone, she knew. God, please give me a way to escape Mr. I Don’t Use Menus. But God had clearly forsaken her, because the party of three women having a girls’ night out were strangers. As were the various groupings of men, some of whom wore Orioles gear and watched the pre-game commentary on the captioned television screens above the bar. An elderly man she didn’t know sat alone nearest to their high-boy table nursing a glass of bourbon, and two seats down from him…sat the hottest man Liv had ever seen.

And that was her impression just from seeing him in profile.

He had dark blond hair and a chiseled jaw, and even sitting, it was clear that he was tall.

Seriously broad shoulders filled out a dark green button-down shirt, and big hands gripped a glass of water. Now God was just being mean. Because someone was going to get to be with that man tonight while she was stuck here with Jerry of the I Don’t Use Menus clan. As she watched, not-Jerry pressed his cell phone to his ear and began talking in tones too low for her to hear.

On a sigh, Liv returned her attention to Jerry. Not that it mattered, because his gaze remained fixed on his phone. She drained the rest of her Prosecco and wished someone would bring her the bottle. That wouldn’t be too awkward for a first date, right? Right?

From New York Times Bestselling author Elisabeth Naughton, comes HUNTED,a new novella in her Eternal Guardians Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

– ABOUT HUNTED

Erebus – Dark in every sense of the word, a skilled and lethal warrior, and sinfully sexy by design.

Since the dawn of modern man, Erebus was Hades’ secret weapon in the war between the immortal realms. Until Hades lost the minor god in a bet to his older brother Zeus. For the last hundred years, Erebus has trained Zeus’s Siren warriors in warfare and the sexual arts. But he’s never stopped longing for freedom. For a life filled with choice. And lately, he also longs for one Siren who entranced him during their steamy seduction sessions. A nymph he quickly became obsessed with and who was ripped from his grasp when her seduction training was complete. One he’s just learned Zeus has marked for death because she failed the last Siren test.

Before Erebus can intercede on the nymph’s behalf, she escapes Olympus and flees into the human realm. In a fit of rage, Zeus commands Erebus to hunt her down and kill her. Erebus sees his opportunity to finally go after what he wants, but he’s torn. Freedom means nothing if the Siren at the center of his fantasies doesn’t truly crave him back. Because defying the gods will unleash the fury of Olympus, and if he chooses her over his duty, whether she joins him in exile or not, the hunter will become the hunted.

– EXCERPT –

“I don’t remember my life with my family,” he said. “Just like Athena does with the Sirens, Krónos stripped my memories so I would never question my servitude to him. Then he bound any powers I had that were stronger than his. Unlike you, though, I’ll never regain those memories. What I know of my past came from Hades. After Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon overthrew Krónos, Hades kept me for himself. I was duty bound to serve him in the Underworld. He’s the one who told me of my past. And he made certain to point out how lucky I was to still be alive. But he didn’t do so to educate me. He did it so I would never be inclined to release Krónos from his prison in Tartarus, and so that I would never fall victim to Krónos’s lies and deception.”

Her mouth fell open, but it was the empathy he saw swirling in her spellbinding eyes that cut right to the heart of him.

He dragged his fingers back to her face and gently traced the sleek line of her jaw, mesmerized by her all over again because he never thought he’d ever meet anyone in the long years of his life who knew what it was like to be alone. “What Zeus did to you was wrong. What he did to your people was wrong. I know what it’s like to lose everyone and to be the last of your line. If I had known about your past…” His gaze dropped from her eyes to her lips. “If I had known, things would have been different. I never would have let you be hunted. After all you’ve been through, agápi, you deserve to be cherished and protected. Because you’re special. Precious. You are the epitome of rare and irreplaceable and unique, and I won’t ever let anyone hurt you again. I’ll do whatever I have to do to keep you safe. I vow this to you here and now.”

Shock rippled through her eyes, and then those eyes darkened to a warm deep blue just before she lifted to her toes and pressed her mouth to his.

– REVIEW –

“In the long, lonely years of his life, for brief, flickering moments, she’d been a light to his darkness . . . And he wanted that nymph back.”

Erebus

Hunted

Kindle Loc 367 of 2081

Tall, dark and devastating Erebus, a minor god in service to Hades (God of the Underworld), finds himself a pawn in a wager between Hades and Zeus. Zeus wins, of course. Erebus is tasked by Zeus to train Zeus’s Sirens in both martial and sexual arts. Of the hundreds Erebus trains, only one Siren, the flaxen haired Seraphine (Sera), finds a place in his heart. Upon receiving an order from Zeus to hunt down a renegade Siren, a shocked (and delighted) Erebus discovers that his prey is none other than Sera.  When she is captured by Erebus, Sera is torn between her own feelings for him, and her secret need to avenge the deaths of her people. Both Erebus and Sera come to acknowledge the undeniable attraction each has for the other, but the cloud of Zeus and his hand in their fate looms large. Their only chance for survival and a future together rests on Erebus and Sera revealing their inner secrets to one another — but can they forge a trust strong enough to defeat all those who hunt them down?

Elisabeth Naughton’s Hunted is offering 8.75 in her popular Eternal Guardians series, and is brought to us by the good people at 1001 Dark Nights.

A short (133 p.), sizzling read, packed with action and brimming with mythological characters, Hunted will delight fans of the series. The plot is fast paced, and the protagonists are well-written, solid characters. With precision, author Naughton weaves her mythological cast through this story. As Erebus and Sera face obstacle after obstacle, characters from the Eternal Guardian series appropriately appear to move the plot along. Hunted is not what I would consider a stand alone novella — it would benefit the reader to have some knowledge of the Eternal Guardian series. But having said that, Hunted is worth the read, if only to enjoy the magnificence of Erebus, the nobility of Sera, and the searing passion that exists between them.

Kudos to Elisabeth Naughton for another great romance her Eternal Guardian universe.

– ABOUT ELISABETH NAUGHTON –

1001 Dark Nights Presents: Blog Tour and Review – Hold Me by J. Kenner

– ABOUT HOLD ME

My life with Damien has never been fuller. Every day is a miracle, and every night I lose myself in the oasis of his arms.

But there are new challenges, too. Our families. Our careers. And new responsibilities that test us with unrelenting, unexpected trials.

I know we will survive—we have to. Because I cannot live without Damien by my side. But sometimes the darkness seems overwhelming, and I am terrified that the day will come when Damien cannot bring the light. And I will have to find the strength inside myself to find my way back into his arms.

– EXCERPT –

I already know that Damien is running later than I am, because he’d called while I was stuck in traffic. Now I dismiss Bree for the night, then go peek in on both my girls. I want to wake them, to cuddle them close, but I let them sleep, contenting myself with watching the steady rise and fall of their little chests.

Then I take a quick shower, change into yoga pants and a T-shirt, and stretch out on our lovely iron bed, surrounded by paperwork.

That’s where I am when Damien finds me—although I’m asleep instead of busily working.

“Hey,” he says, brushing a kiss on my shoulder. “Long day?”

As I claw my way back to consciousness, he gathers my papers and sets them on the bedside table. There’s a glass of wine, too, and he hands it to me. I try to avoid alcohol since I’m breastfeeding, but I also did the research and know that a little bit isn’t a problem so long as I wait to pump or feed Anne.

“The longest,” I say, then take a grateful sip. I lean sideways against him, my back supported by the pile of pillows that rest against the wall. I give him the full rundown, the highlight of which is Eric’s surprising departure.

“You can handle continued growth,” he says, his loyalty giving me a nice warm boost of confidence. “But you’re also well-positioned to simply hold the line if that’s what you want to do. Even to downsize if it works out that way.”

I push away from him, frowning as my chest tightens uncomfortably. “What?”

“I’m just saying that you don’t have to go back to work full-throttle.”

I sit up straight. “Excuse me? Why? Because you can support us?”

“I can support us. But what I’m—”

“So I’m supposed to feel guilty about wanting to work just because you bring in billions?” Dammit, he knows how important my job is to me. How hard I’ve worked to build my business on my own, not relying on money that comes from Stark International.

He stares at me like someone might stare at a wild hyena. “That’s not what I’m saying at all.”

– REVIEW –

Nikki Stark finally has it all — a doting and gorgeous husband, two darling daughters, and a lifestyle that would envy most women.  As owner of Fairchild Development, an app developer, Nikki is proud of her accomplishments. Her husband, Damien Stark, a former tennis pro turned business mogul owns Stark International. He’s worth billions, and he adores Nikki. So why is it so important that Nikki head back to her own company after giving birth to their second child, Anne, when her heart is telling her to stay with her babies? Is Fairchild Development more important than missing milestone moments in her daughters’ lives? What demons compel Nikki to ignore her inner voice?

J. Kenner’s Hold Me is a Stark Ever After novella, and brought to you by the fine people at 1001 Dark Nights. A very short story, Hold Me is a delicious and satisfying treat for those readers who have been following Damien and Nikki’s story, but you absolutely do not have to be familiar with these characters to appreciate this novella. Nikki’s character deals with a dilemma many working mothers face on a daily basis, and this lends an appreciable depth to the story. Luckily, Nikki has in Damien a husband who lives to love her, and the steamy scenes between these two will have the reader wiping condensation off of, well, everything. But there is more to this story than billionaires dealing with childcare issues. While the Starks are certainly glamorous people, they are not immune to open wounds from tragic pasts. Credit the author for making Nikki and Damien very believable and sympathetic characters.

Mature reading, J. Kenner’s Hold Me is the kind of short story with substance that one finds so enjoyable whether its read at the beach, on a flight, or just hanging out at home.
