– ABOUT SWEET SURRENDER

sweet-surrender-tour-teaser-1It’s been twelve years since Liza Carmichael stepped foot in Surrender, but after her great aunt’s death she has no choice but to return and settle her estate. Which includes the corner bakery that’s been a staple in Surrender for more than fifty years.

After twenty-five years on the job, Lieutenant Grant Boone finds himself at loose ends now that he’s retired. He’s gotten a number of job offers—one from MacKenzie Security—but he’s burned out and jaded, and the last thing he wants to do is carry the burden of another badge and weapon. He almost turns down the invitation from his good friend Cooper MacKenzie to stay as their guest for a few weeks while he’s deciding what to do with the rest of his life. But he packs his bag and heads to Surrender anyway.

The only thing Boone knows is that his future plans don’t include Liza Carmichael. She’s bossy, temperamental, and the confections she bakes are sweet enough to tempt a saint. Thank God he’s never pretended to be one. But after he gets one taste of Liza and things start heating up in the kitchen, he realizes how delicious new beginnings can be.

He could tell by looking the woman was an absolute hellcat. He’d tussled with them before, and he had a knack for attracting them. He’d worked most of his career undercover, but he always seemed to connect with dangerous women who added an extra element of risk to his drug enforcement days.

Grant grinned and shook his head. “Damn, Coop. You shouldn’t have said that. You know I love a good warning.”

“Her name’s Liza Carmichael,” Cooper said. “Her great aunt passed not long ago. She ran that bakery for fifty years. Mrs. Baker never missed a morning’s opening. Though I seem to recall her coming in late once after she buried her husband in the early nineties.”

“The old lady who owned the bakery was named Mrs. Baker?” Grant asked.

“Ironic, huh?”

“So Surrender has a new pastry chef,” Grant said. “Maybe I’ll take up donut eating after all. Once a cop, always a cop.”

Cooper laughed and shook his head. “You always were a glutton for punishment.”

“I miss the adrenaline rush.”

“Hey, I know what you mean. And I’m not saying you should swear off donuts, but honestly, I’d stay away from her. She’s made it crystal clear that her intentions are to lease the space or sell it outright. Whichever brings her the greatest profit. She has no desire to stay in Surrender.”

“Perfect,” he said. “Neither do I.”

Grant ran his fingers through his hair, pushing it back off his face, and he noticed Cooper’s scowl as his gaze locked on the disfiguring scar that ran the length of his left jaw to just behind his ear. He knew Cooper still carried the guilt of the injury, but there was nothing he or anyone could’ve done. It was just an undercover drug deal gone bad.

“Coop,” he said, trying to divert attention back to the very sexy Ms. Carmichael. “I can assure you that I will never swear off donuts. I have a powerful sweet tooth.”

“Are we still talking about actual donuts?”

“There’s all kinds of donuts,” he said, smiling. “And I’ve got a hell of an appetite.”

– REVIEW –

“I’m swearing off donuts,” he said in a slow drawl . . . .

“That’s a damned shame,” she said, feeling herself go hot all over. “I don’t think you’ve ever tasted one of my donuts. They’ll melt in your mouth.”

Grant Boone to Liza Carmichael

Sweet Surrender

Kindle Loc. 257 of 1301

Yeah, well ex-Detroit cop Grant Boone has no intention of swearing off donuts, especially a tasty donut of the Liza Carmichael variety.  Forced into an early retirement as fallout from some nasty action by his ex partner (and lover), Ryan Caine, Grant finds himself in Surrender, Montana.  Sheriff Cooper MacKenzie is an old buddy of Grant, and would like nothing better than to have his friend settle in Surrender as his deputy. But Grant’s crazy ex, Ryan is looking to kill him and Grant is basically running for his life.

Liza Carmichael is stopping in Surrender only long enough to sell her late Aunt Rose’s bakery. Like Grant, Liza has also been done wrong in the romance department and once the estate is settled, she’s headed to a new life in Los Angeles. Unfortunately for Liza, her plans are thwarted when Ryan shoots up the bakery in an attempt to kill Grant. Sheriff Cooper, Grant and Liza are all injured in the attempted murder, with the Sheriff sustaining some serious injuries, ending up in a hospital bed.  Grant and Liza, meanwhile, find a nice, big bed of their own in a safe place and proceed to tend their wounds by exchanging all sorts of bodily fluids, resulting in an epiphany for both — maybe Surrender is the perfect place to bury the past and start a future.

Sweet Surrender, a stand alone novella and part of author Liliana Hart’s popular MacKenzie Family series, is brought to you by the team at 1001 Dark Nights.  Action packed and filled with both sizzling chemistry and sassy dialogue, author Hart has written a gem of a story that was over too soon — I hope we hear more from these characters (something about a méange à trois, was mentioned, I believe). Sweet Surrender is a throughly enjoyable bit of naughty goodness — well done, Liliana Hart!

The Promise of Surrender

by

Liliana Hart

– SYNOPSIS –

The Promise of Surrender - coverMia Russo spent ten years working undercover, entrenched in the dregs of society before handing in her shield. Opening her own pawn shop is a piece of cake in comparison. All she needs is the bad attitude she developed on the streets and the shotgun under her counter to keep law and order. Until the day Zeke McBride walks into her shop.

Zeke knows Mia has every right not to trust him. He was the one who chose the next op instead of her. And all he can hope is that somewhere under the snarl and cynicism is a woman who can forgive. Because whether she trusts him or not, they’re going to have to work together to bring down the gang that’s decided Mia is their next target.

– EXCERPT –

The drive into Surrender was quick and easy. The town was locked up tight for the most part. All the shops downtown were dark except for the gaslights that flickered along the walkways. There were lights coming from some of the apartments above the shops, including hers, but it looked like most of the action was happening down at Duffey’s Pub at the far end of Main Street.

She rolled her window down and could hear the beat of the music from the live band. Cars littered the parking lot and every light imaginable was on, inside and out. Duffey’s wasn’t her scene, but still she was tempted to take a detour and head that direction. Drink a couple of beers, dance with a couple of ranch hands, and keep her mind off Zeke.

But instead, she pulled into her parking space behind the building and climbed the stairs to the second floor. If she

could get a cold beer and a shower then all would be right with the world. The only issue was the man sitting in her rocking chair.

“I didn’t figure you’d want me going inside without you,” he said, his smile easy. As if nothing more than a simple conversation had passed between them earlier. It was one of the things that had always driven her crazy about him. When he was over something, he was over it, and he moved on. Her emotions weren’t quite as settled.

“You figured right,” she said. “I would’ve shot first and asked questions later.”

“I thought that temper of yours would’ve settled over the years.”

“Nope, I’m mean as a snake.”

“That’s not what the ladies at the bakery downstairs said. Those are amazing cinnamon rolls, by the way.”

“I know. Why are you here again? I figure if I keep asking you’ll eventually tell me.”

“Don’t you want to know what the ladies had to say about you?”

If she stood there looking at him too much longer she’d end up straddling his lap and throwing caution to the wind. He sent her body into overdrive—it didn’t matter that it had been seven years. Hell, when they’d been together it hadn’t mattered if he’d just taken her and she was still lying limp and sweaty beneath him. He always made her want him.

He lounged back in the chair like a big jungle cat, and his eyes were predatory. If she let him inside she knew where they’d end up. Even from where she stood she could feel the arcs of electricity between them.

– REVIEW –

The Promise of Surrender - R&E Tour - Teaser 1After witnessing the execution of her best friend, Rachel, undercover cop Mia Russo hands in her badge and starts a new life as the owner of a pawn shop near Surrender, Montana. But it’s not just her old job she leaves behind.

Zeke McBride prides himself on being the best at his work — undercover agent, commanding officer of a DEA Taskforce. Life endangering, adrenalin-pumping work, Zeke loves the job. Duty has always come first — that’s why Mia Russo left him seven years ago.  Dangerous circumstances have given Zeke the chance to come face-to-face with Mia again, and he’s not going to let her walk away this time.

Liliana Hart’s The Promise of Surrender is the newest offering of the 1001 Dark Nights Series, as well as being the latest offering in her MacKenzie Family Series. It’s a fast-paced, standalone novella that, for this reader, ended too soon.  Hart’s characters are rock solid — their dialogue rings true and their actions believable. The attraction between Mia and Zeke sizzles from the moment he walks into her pawn shop, and the heat rockets off the charts from there.

The plot is well thought out and its resolution satisfying. And, oh, let me mention again — the electricity between Mia and Zeke could fulfill the needs of any major power grid in North America.  The only kind of blackouts in this novella are orgasmic — well done, Ms. Hart!

Note: The Promise of Surrender is a novella written for adult entertainment. Set in the West, it is not a Western, but rather a very nice bedtime tale for the grown-ups — not for the little doggies.
