Review: The Catch by K. Bromberg

– ABOUT THE CATCH

After an unexpected twist of fate, All-Star catcher Easton Wylder is left questioning the loyalty of everyone around him.

Even the woman who shares his bed, Scout Dalton.

But if Easton thought being uprooted to the last place he expected was the only challenge life had to throw at him, he was dead wrong.

With an ailing shoulder and his career in limbo, his decision to make an unexpected change leads him to question everything – Scout’s love, family loyalties, and whether he can conquer the one obstacle he’s never been able to overcome. The secret he’s never shared with anyone.

He may be a man pushed to his limits, but he’s hell-bent on proving his worth no matter the cost.

Sensual romantic foreplay by couple in love in bed

– REVIEW –

There are very few books, especially duets, that I read and automatically pre-order the next installment. But I did just that when I finished K. Bromberg’s The Player in April. Like hearing the crack of a baseball bat that leads to a grand slam, I knew The Catch, the concluding book of The Player Duet, was going to be a terrific story. And I was not disappointed.

The Catch continues the story of Easton Wylder — a mega star baseball player, who lives and breathes the game. Baseball is his religion, his reason for living, his everything until an injury sidelines him.  Scout Dalton, daughter of legendary sports trainer, Doc Dalton, steps into her father’s shoes to rehab Easton’s busted shoulder. Both Easton and Scout bleed baseball, and soon their passion for the game is secondary to the passion they have for each other.

Easton and Scout are noble characters, and in The Catch, they continue to be, as together they dodge the wild pitches life throws at them. Especially Easton, who reveals himself to be the kind of man any parent aspires their child to become, the man every woman wants to father and raise her child, and the kind of person you want as your best friend for life.

Credit author K. Bromberg for cleverly salting The Player (Book One of the Player Duet) with clues that turn out to be major plot twists in The Catch. And while The Catch is in the genre of sports romance, and the story plays out the baseball/life metaphor beautifully, make no mistake, this story is incredibly romantic. Easton will make you swoon. The sexual chemistry that envelops Easton and Scout is ever present. And there is always, always in the background, the distant but clear cheer of the crowd.

Bromberg’s writing style is a pleasure to read. This story has no fillers, no extraneous characters — just solid writing. Again, allow it to speak for itself — here’s Easton’s tragically addicted mother, Meg, in a moment of clarity and love — speaking to her son:

“There will come a day, son, when someone will love the parts of you that no one else knows how to love.”

Kindle Loc. 2177 of 3701

The Catch is a fitting conclusion to The Player — I was left satisfied, but with the desire to have the ability to peek into Easton and Scout’s life far, far down the road. There is an Epilogue that brought tears to my eyes, and I am just going to have to be satisfied with that bit of generosity from Ms. Bromberg.

The perfect summer read, especially if you are a member of the Church of Baseball, I give The Catch, specifically The Player Duet, my highest recommendation. You will not be disappointed.

– ABOUT MOST VALUABLE PLAYBOY –

Hands down, my favorite thing in the world is to score. Touchdowns.

Don’t let the fact that I’m the leading pick in the Most Valuable Playboy charity auction fool you. These days, I’m only a player on the field. I’ve kept my pants zipped all season long — and it has been long — because nothing’s more important than leading my team to victory every week. Except maybe escaping from the owner’s handsy-as-hell sister who seems dead set on winning more than a date with me at the auction.

Enter Violet and a well-placed Hail Mary.

She’s my best friend’s sister with a smile as sweet as cherry pie and a mind that runs quicker than the 40-yard-dash. After Violet saves the day with the highest bid, I don’t even give her a two-minute warning before I kiss her in front of the whole crowd and then announce that she’s my girlfriend. Which would be fine except my agent tells me the next day that we’ve got to keep up the act while he’s negotiating my contract.

Violet says she’ll take one for the team and pretend to be mine, but our boyfriend-girlfriend scrimmage quickly turns into a full contact sport. And soon enough, I want this game with her to go into overtime. The problem is — I’ve been riding the bench for years.

How can a guy like me, who finally has a chance to prove his worth on the field, convince the girl she’s most valuable to his heart?

Review Blitz: The Player by K. Bromberg (Book 1 of The Player Duet)

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00074]Baseball has never been sexier in an all-new novel by New York Times Bestselling Author, K. Bromberg.

Easton Wylder is baseball royalty. The game is his life. His passion. His everything.

Except it’s not Doc who greets Easton for his first session, but rather, his daughter, Scout. But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?

– REVIEW –

I’m not a huge fan of sports romances — I find them pretty predicable. In the case of a baseball romance, the usual plot involves a sassy jock, and an equally sassy baseball Annie, some locker room smack, and ultimately revolves around a pennant chase. That is not the case with The Player. Author K. Bromberg takes that trope and elevates it to the level of pure poetry.

Scout Dalton lives and breathes baseball. Daughter of the legendary physical therapist, Doc Dalton, the lovely Scout follows in her father’s footsteps, rehabbing injured players. Having learned from the best, Scout has gained a sterling reputation of her own in the league. When Doc can’t make the trip to Texas to aid the Austin Ace’s franchise player, Easton Wylder, regain his million dollar arm, Doc sends Scout in his place.

Like Scout Dalton, Easton Wylder was born into the world of baseball. Son of legendary Cal ”Iron Man” Wylder, the gifted and hunky Easton has become a mega star in the major leagues. Ever conscious of the long shadow cast by his father’s success in the game, Easton wants nothing more than to heal his arm and return to his team.

While Easton plays baseball, he’s not a playa. The same could be said of Scout — passionate about the game, Scout is no cleat chaser. Both Easton and Scout are people of goodwill, with noble hearts that have been forged by tragedy and loss. That they are instantly attracted to one another is no surprise, but what is beautiful about this story is how they bond with each other over their love of the game, love of their family, and, ultimately, the love they have for one another.

I could rave about K. Bromberg’s writing style, but allow it to speak for itself — here’s Scout, reflecting about a baseball field:

“And right now I’d challenge anyone who told me this diamond doesn’t sparkle as brightly as the rock you wear on your finger. With empty seats or with a sold-out crowd, this outshines jewelry any day.”

Kindle Loc. 1286 of 3982

And here’s a peek into Easton’s heart:

“Who needs grass that’s greener on the other side when you’re a huge fan of how green the grass is beneath your feet?”

Kindle Loc. 3858 of 3982

Bromberg’s characters have depth — they’re so well crafted. Even the secondary characters in this story are clearly written. The plot is solid and stunning — no filler, no wasted words. The reader experiences both the heart-lifting as well as the gut-punching events right along with the characters (no small feat in this reader’s book). My only complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger — a HUGE cliffhanger. Take it as a testament as to how much I loved The Player that, as soon as I finished it, I preordered the concluding story, The Catch.

K. Bromberg’s The Player is so much more than a sexy baseball romance — it’s an outstanding tale of adult people dealing with the curve balls thrown at them by life.

– ABOUT HAIL MARY –

At a boxing gym in Chicago, Mary Monahan accidentally knocks out the most handsome man she’s ever met. After she wakes him up with a few slaps and some smelling salts, the very first thing he does is ask her out for ribs and beer. His name is Jimmy. He looks like a Gillette model. And he’s just too hunky to resist.

Jimmy “The Falcon” Falconi is mystified that Mary has absolutely no idea who he is. Mystified and refreshed. He is, after all, not your everyday NFL quarterback. He shops at Costco, has a soft spot for Pinterest, and is in the midst of an epic losing streak.

Jimmy falls for Mary fast and hard, the way he does everything—balls out and like it’s fourth and long. And he realizes he’s finally met his match. That stamina he’s so proud of? Doesn’t stand a chance against her Kegels.

But what they don’t know is she’s also his new physical therapist, recently hired by the Bears to work on his rotator cuff…and groin injury. If she can’t help him, he’ll be traded faster than they can say “offensive penetration.”

In spite of the thousands of internet memes featuring Jimmy’s face with captions like: “HEY GIRL, WANT TO TOUCH MY BALLS?” Mary finds herself falling for him and his unrelenting desire to make her his.

Until a toddler shows up at Jimmy’s door.

And throws their lives into total chaos.

Review: For the Win by Rochelle Allison and Angel Lawson

FOR THE WIN

by

ROCHELLE ALLISON and ANGEL LAWSON

– SYNOPSIS –

FTW RGB eBookFormer All-Star collegiate goalie, Julian Anderson, has spent the last year off the grid, putting his life and health back together after losing nearly everything and everyone important in his life due to a series of bad decisions in college. But when he gets a call from the US Men’s Soccer team, asking him to play in the Olympic Games, he’s thrust back into the world he’s tried so hard to distance himself from.

Julian doesn’t want back in the league, especially when the dubious details of the arrangement are revealed, but accepting could give him a chance to reform his tarnished image. And, if he plays by the rules, he may have a shot at winning not just a gold medal but the heart of his first love, star forward of the Women’s team, Melina Diaz.

Focused and determined, Melina is skeptical that Julian can change his destructive ways. She plans to have little to do with her ex until the stress of the Games get to her and she finds herself falling back on the one person that knows her the best.

This August, all eyes will be on Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the world’s elite athletes come together to compete in the most prestigious sporting event of their lifetime. The Games will bring the world together but may tear Julian and Melina even further apart.

– REVIEW –

Not all Olympic heroes end up on cereal boxes.

Julian Anderson, along with his twin, Allie, grew up in a lower income area of Atlanta.  Raised by a single mom, Julian (a Type I diabetic) and Allie found their passion in the game of soccer. And their passion served them well — it proved to be the ticket that took them, along with their childhood friend (and fellow soccer player), Melina from the muddy athletic fields of their hometown to berths on the 2016 U. S. Olympic Team.

Julian’s story is the sort of “Up Close and Personal” human interest angle that causes media producers to salivate — whether the focus be on Julian’s heath issues, his relationship with Melina or the bond between the sibling Olympians.  But in the case of Julian, Allie and Melina, the canned story never comes near the triumphant truth of reality.

For the Win is a collaboration between first-time author Rochelle Allison and veteran author Angel Lawson.

A story of personal redemption, For the Win focuses on the rise of Julian’s career, his fall from grace, and ultimately, the selfless act that sets him back on a steady course in life. Told in three parts, the authors weave a seamless story using present day action and interviews interspersed with flashbacks that delivers to the reader an enthralling tale of love and sacrifice.  From a beach in North Carolina to the Rio Olympiad, this story flows at a rapid but steady pace. Julian, Allie and Melina are solidly crafted characters, all completely believable. The action in Part Three (In Rio) captures the excitement of competition from the athlete’s point of view in both a vivid and breathtaking manner. (The glimpse into life within the save haven of the Olympic Village was fascinating.)

An excellent read, For the Win delivers the gold for authors Allison and Lawson.

Ladies, take a well deserved victory lap.

– EXCERPT –

A movie started playing on the back of each seat, but I focused on Cordy. Her polo was unbuttoned, and I could see the swell of her breast. My cock went from fight mode to fuck mode in the time it took me to shift more toward Cordy.

“Are we…” She nibbled her lip.

I grabbed her chin and turned her to face me. “What?”

“Are we like, together?” She stumbled over her next words, as if she couldn’t get them out fast enough. “I know it’s too early to DTR—”

“DTR?” I grinned.

“Define the relationship.” She furrowed her brow.

“Right. Well, I define it as you’re mine and I’m yours. How’s that?”

Her gaze brightened. My phone buzzed again, but I ignored it.

“Someone’s calling you.” She glanced to my pants.

“It’s my mother.”

“Oh.”

I’d told Cordy about the difficulties I had with my mom, but I didn’t go into the details of how much acrimony our relationship would stir up. Mom had no doubt seen the press conference. She would know. Mom always knew. She was waiting for me to pick up the phone so she could load me down with Carlotta’s tears, my family’s legacy, and the bright future she thought I was throwing away. I’d deal with it. Later.

I leaned close to Cordy’s ear. “Put your jacket on your lap.”

She turned to me, a wary look on her heart-shaped face. “Why?”

“It’s cold.”

“Not really.”

“You’re trembling.”

She arched a brow. “Not because I’m cold.”

“Then why?”

“Because you—” She seemed to rethink her answer and, instead of responding, pulled her jacket into her lap as I’d requested.

“Good. My hands are cold.” I slid my palm along her thigh beneath the jacket.

She jumped and looked at me with a scandalized expression. “Trent!” She hissed through clenched teeth.

“What?” I pressed my fingers higher until I reached the apex of her thighs, then I eased my hand between her legs.

“We can’t do this here.” She glanced around, but no one could see us in the dark, and if anyone was looking, all they’d see was us sitting together and Cordy’s jacket in her lap.

I rubbed my index finger along the seam of her jeans over her clit. “We can.”

She gripped my wrist, but I didn’t stop. Her breathing grew faster as I stroked her. My cock demanded reciprocity, but it would have to wait. I wanted to pleasure her more than anything. When her lips parted, I knew I had her.

I pressed my lips to her ear. “Unbutton your jeans, and unzip them.”

She tilted her hips forward and did as I’d said.

“You’ll have to be quiet.” I ran my fingers along her quivering stomach and she let out a small sound.

– SYNOPSIS –

Stealing Home-5.jpgBeing the only woman working for a professional baseball team isn’t easy. As the San Diego Shock’s newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players’ advances. Given she’s already the subject of a handful of rumors about how “lucky” she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can’t so much as flutter an eyelash a player’s way if she wants to be taken seriously.

But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie’s way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn’t let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs.

He’s a player, and in Allie’s experience, they’re all the same. She won’t risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true.

And maybe he is.

Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer’s stature and decide who she’ll put her faith in—The man she’s falling for? Or the rumors?

– EXCERPT –

When the photographer announced he was going to commence shooting, I turned my head away, focusing on the space just over Archer’s shoulder. “You didn’t know I existed before last night,” I said quietly, so no one else in the room could hear.

“I’ve known you’ve existed from the first day you walked out onto the diamond at spring practice.” He was back to barely moving his lips, managing to hold a sexy-as-hell smirk as he stared at the camera.

“And why was last night the first time you ever said anything to me?”

His eyes darted my way for a moment. “Because you didn’t seem like the type who was open to mixing business with pleasure, and I respected that.”

“That’s why we’re in our present situation?” I glanced down at myself, where his jersey was floating a good foot above my knees. “Because you respected my policy on that topic?”

The corner of his mouth twitched, the lights of the camera flashing in his eyes. “Hey, even a patient man has his limits.” With that, the position of his bat moved so the end of it was nuzzled into my backside. Which meant his fist curled around it was all up in my butt’s business too.

His crooked smile became more pronounced.

The photographer whistled, I guess approving of whatever feedback he was getting on his end of the camera. “Every woman in America wants to be you right now, sweetheart.”

Archer grunted, his knuckles digging a little deeper into my ass. “More like every guy in America wants to be me right now.”  I did my best to stay still and, you know, keep from hyperventilating. The heat from the lights, combined with the heat spilling from his body, was stifling. With his cleats on and me being barefoot, Luke Archer seemed that much taller. With my petite body pressed up against his, his frame seemed that much more imposing. With his arms snug around me, I could feel the strength he possessed. It was the kind that was meant for power. The kind that told me he could do anything he wanted to me and I’d be helpless to stop it. It was thrilling at the same time it was terrifying.

A few minutes later, my heart still thudding so hard I prayed he couldn’t hear it, the skin between Archer’s brows creased. “When will the magazines go up for auction?”

“In two months. Don’t worry, we’ll send you one.” The photographer continued to snap photo after photo.

“Yeah, I’m going to need more than that.”

“How many more?”

The crease deepened. I was trying to keep my head turned away from him, but my eyes weren’t so capable of the task.

“Eh, thirty? Maybe forty? Just enough for every wall in my apartment. Don’t worry, I’ll pay whatever the auction price winds up being.”

My forehead creased. “Every wall in your apartment?”

“I like my name on your back.”

The way he said it, like it should have been obvious and required no explanation, made me smile. “Such a caveman.”

“If I was a caveman, I’d tell you where I’d rather have my name on you.” Archer’s fist pressed into my backside enough to smash me closer to him. “Tattooed on you so you couldn’t just take it off or wash it off.”

“Wow, okay, so I retract my former accusation in favor of labeling you some barbarian-Neanderthal-caveman hybrid.”

“Before you form any more unfavorable opinions of me, let me just remind you that I’m a baseball player.” When I arched a brow at him, he continued, “I’m good with my hands, know what to do with a big stick, and am used to getting dirty.”

I had to bite my lip to keep from smiling. I didn’t want him to think I found any of what he’d said endearing, even though I kind of did.

With my hand tucked behind his back, I pinched at his side. “Only in baseball is someone highly skilled if they hit one third of the balls thrown in their direction.”

His plastered on smolder fell when he shot me a wounded expression. “Sure Coach doesn’t have you around to keep our egos in check?”

“A pro baseball player’s ego? No amount of insults could keep that in check.” I felt my straight face falter as he threw me another injured look.

“Triple ouch.”

“Oh, please. You like it.”

“Yeah”—he tipped his hips into me just enough—“I do.”

I nearly leapt through the ceiling when I felt him hard against me, but I recovered. Eventually.

“Everything okay?” the photographer asked, not sounding like he really cared.

Archer waited for me to answer.

“Everything’s great,” I muttered.

“Thanks. I get that a lot.” Archer’s eyes were spilling amusement.

Grumbling under my breath, I did my best to stay cool and collected through the remainder of the shoot. I felt the opposite though.

After a minute, Archer must have noticed the frustrated look on my face. “Sorry,” he whispered.

“Sorry for what?” I asked. “That I’m wearing nothing but your jersey? That I somehow wound up in this photo shoot when I had no idea I’d be posing for Sports Anonymous with Luke Archer? Or are you sorry for your erection you clearly can’t control when I’m stuck sandwiched between you and a baseball bat?”

Archer lowered his head so his mouth was beside my ear. “I’m sorry if my ‘erection’ makes you uncomfortable.”

“But not sorry because you have one, right?”

His head shook slowly. “No, not sorry for that.”

“Of course not.”

When he shrugged, the band of muscle beneath his chest moved against my hand. “At least now you know.”

“At least now I know what?”

“How I feel.”

I blew out a breath. “Yeah, I have a really good idea how you feel. Thanks for clearing it up.”

The harder Archer fought his smile, the more pronounced his dimple became. The auction price for these issues just spiked a grand or two. The children’s hospital could thank me later.

“You know how this game works. I know how.” He paused, letting that settle in the space between us. “You just have to decide if you want to play.”

“Because you have decided?”

His bat pressed deeper into my back, drawing me impossibly closer to his body. His arousal settled hard into the side of my stomach. “Doc, I’m already playing.”
