Review: Beneath the Scars by Melanie Moreland

IMG_1548Cliff’s Edge, Maine hangs on the edge of the continent.  It’s a place of harsh beauty, where the ocean waves pound the land relentlessly and is the perfect setting for Melanie Moreland’s novel, Beneath the Scars.

A betrayed Megan Greene needs a safe place to heal after discovering her boss/boyfriend has stolen her manuscript and fully intends to publish it under his name. Stunned by his theft and wounded by his deceit, Megan seeks sanctuary in a beach house owned by her friend, Karen, located in the town of Cliff’s Edge.

Almost immediately upon her arrival, Megan is captivated and intrigued by her reclusive neighbor, Zachary Adams.

Zachary, too, is wounded.  Betrayed by family and friends, Zachary’s scars are both emotional and physical.  He wants nothing more than to retreat from society and live a reclusive existence.  Zachary has succeeded in doing so for the past ten years, so when a persistent Megan arrives at his doorstep attempting to coax him out of his self-imposed solitary confinement, he reacts, not surprisingly, horribly. But it doesn’t last for long — Zachary had seen Megan about town and he’s been fighting the instant attraction he felt towards her from the very moment he laid eyes on her.

Author Melanie Moreland is a prolific and gifted writer.  Beautifully paced, Beneath the Scars takes the reader down into the pits of both Zachary and Megan’s individual despair and up through to the joyous and healing discovery of their love for one another.  Full of angst, you’ll want to have not only tissues at hand, but also something unbreakable to throw — the behavior of these two characters was absolutely frustrating at times. But give author Moreland her due — this story absolutely grabs hold of the reader.

A perfect rainy day read. Well done, Melanie Moreland.

Melanie Moreland

Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-six-plus 7355350years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory.

While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.

Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.
