-ABOUT MY IMAGE OF YOU

A globe-trotting bad boy chases the one that got away in this addictive novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Contract.

My name is Adam Kincaid, and I’m the best at what I do. After losing my parents, I decided to follow in their footsteps, and now I’m the most daring freelance photographer in the world.

Maybe some think I’m a loner, but I don’t care. All that matters is the shot: braving danger and devastation in search of a single image with the power to tell someone’s story. But as good as I am, accidents happen—and thank god for that, because it’s what leads me to her. . . .

Alexandra Robbins. My nurse. My savior.

With her fiery red hair and crystal-clear blue eyes, the camera loves her . . . and I have to have her. We soon find that we’re perfect together. We just fit, physically and emotionally. And yet something isn’t right. Something from her past is haunting her, and no matter what I do to help her break free, I lose her.

Today is the day I try to win her back. Not only do I need an explanation, I need her in my bed once again. I don’t just want a damn picture—I want her. Because what we have is a love that never fades away. . . .

This sexy standalone novel has no cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA—but Adam works hard to get it! Includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

– EXCERPT –

“Then why are you still here?”

“I had coffee with another nurse. I was leaving and I saw you standing here, holding up the wall. Or is it holding you up?” She shot back.

I ignored her remark. “You could have come to tell me you were leaving.”

She crossed her arms. “No, I couldn’t, Adam. We aren’t supposed to fraternize with the patients, and I wouldn’t risk my job. I was going to call you later and see how you were, though.”

My fingers itched to touch her cheek. I wanted to know if her blush warmed her skin. Her words, however, grabbed my attention.

“You were going to call me?” I asked, surprised. “How’d you get my number?”

“Off your file,” she admitted.

“I was gonna give it to you. And ask for yours,” I murmured, and gave in to the feeling, cupping one of her cheeks as I stroked it with my thumb. Her skin was incredible—silky, smooth, and yes, so very warm.

She didn’t back away from my caress. Our eyes met and held. So many emotions were in her wide, expressive gaze that looked more green than blue in the dim light. There were shadows of exhaustion under them, and the sudden need to care for her hit me. I blinked at the sensation—I had never once in my life experienced anything like it. I stepped back, my sudden movement making me dizzy, and I leaned back into the wall for support.

“You need to go home, Adam. You should have stayed until they released you,” she admonished.

“Yeah, this head thing is messing me up.” I huffed in frustration, unused to feeling so weak. “I need to grab a cab.”

“I’ll drive you.”

I looked at her in surprise. “Yeah? You sure?”

“You’re not a serial killer, are you?”

I arched my eyebrow. “As if I’d admit that when you were falling into my trap so easily?”

She grinned, her dimples deep. “Well, 6B drove me crazy all night, maybe you could take out your homicidal tendencies on them instead.”

I laughed at her humor. “I’ll try and resist.” Then I frowned. “Wait, what room was I in?”

Her grin widened and I knew who had driven her crazy. I grinned back, liking her teasing.

“Okay. My car is right there.” She pointed to a gray Honda parked at the curb. “Do you need help?”

“I can manage.”

I slung my bag over my shoulder and pushed off the wall carefully. I didn’t want to embarrass myself any more than I already had by falling.

Slowly, I followed her, watching her hips sway as she walked.

She was a pretty girl to look at, but the view was damn awesome from the back, as well.

THE CONTRACT by MELANIE MORELAND

– ABOUT  THE CONTRACT

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.

Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.

Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract — fiancée instead of PA.

What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?

Sparks.

That’s what happens.

Can the power of love really change a person?

Will they survive the contract?

What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

– REVIEW-

(Originally posted June 14, 2016

“Think of this as an opportunity. A lucrative one . . . A deal with the devil, if you want.”

The Contract

p. 13

Katherine “Katy” Elliott is in dire straights. So much so that when her boss, douchebag extraordinaire, Richard VanRyan offers her a ticket out of her financial troubles in exchange for participating in a sham romantic relationship, Katy has no choice but to sign on the dotted line.

Poor Katy — she’s had a tough life, but it hasn’t broken her — yet. Her job at the advertising firm, Anderson, Inc., is the only thing keeping her afloat and to that end, Katy is the model employee. She cannot afford to lose this job. Unfortunately, she’s been reassigned to be the new assistant to Richard VanRyan  – a job so odious that the company pays Katy a premium over her standard salary. How bad can this guy be?

Meet Richard VanRyan. Handsome and wealthy with a reputation as a love ‘em and leave ‘em playboy, Richard is a rising star in the advertising universe. Infuriated when passed over for a partnership at Anderson, Richard decides to take his talents elsewhere but advertising firms in Victoria, B.C. are not plentiful. The only other company in town worthy of his genius is The Gavin Group — a first class, straight-up family owned firm that openly embraces family values. Richard realizes that getting into the door of The Gavin Group will require that he clean up his playboy act immediately.

Hell bent on sticking it to his boss at Anderson while at the same time scoring points with his prospective employers at Gavin, Richard comes up with the idea to stage his exit from Anderson as one necessitated by a deep love for his assistant, Katy. You see, Anderson, Inc. has a strict “no fraternization” policy that is fully enforced, regardless of stature within the Company. It’s a win-win for Richard — all he has to do is get his doormat of an assistant, Katy, on board. Good luck with that, buddy . . . .

Since Katy has been Richard’s assistant, he’s tried everything to get her to quit — he can’t stand her. Richard makes no secret the level of contempt he has for Katy — she’s dowdy, a spineless creature that he bullies at will.  (Here one must credit author Melanie Moreland in creating, with an economy of words, such a despicable character in Richard that this reader feels the need to caution other readers to consider purchasing the paperback as opposed to the eBook — the hard copy can handle the inevitable impact with a wall — the eReader, not so much.)

Katy is fully aware of her boss’s disdain for her, but is clueless as to why he’s so cruel. Make no mistake — Katy’s neither a fool nor a doormat — she has legitimate reasons for tolerating Richard’s attitude towards her.

When Richard does an about-face towards her, Katy’s survival instincts kick into overdrive, and Richard discovers Katy is neither spineless nor a doormat. Buy the time he gets Katy to sign the contract to pose as his fiancee, Richard is already re-evaluating his opinion of Katy on all counts. Maybe she’s not so bad . . . .

The Contract is Melanie Moreland’s best writing to date.  While the tropes utilized by the author are very familiar (the contractual relationship that grows into the authentic, tossed about with small bits of the Cinderella/Pretty Woman scenarios), it is the magical writing of Melanie Moreland that keeps the reader invested in the story. The Contract is neither repetitive nor tiring — author Moreland’s writing has the capacity to evoke visceral reactions from her readers to the degree that one just wants to step into the story, grab Richard VanRyan by the scruff and shake some sense into this enorme chapeau de cul.

Whether you’re looking for a great summer read or just enjoy a well-written contemporary adult romance, Melanie Moreland’s The Contract is time well spent.

-REVIEW OF THE BABY CLAUSE 2.0 –

Samuel Richardson’s famous quote, “That dangerous  . . . notion, that a reformed rake makes the best husband” is a sentiment that one would think certainly applies to Richard VanRyan, antagonist of Melanie Moreland’s wildly successful The Contract. But of course, if you’re reading this, you probably know that author Moreland performed some wizardry in that book, via a character named Katy Elliott. In the follow-up novella, The Baby Clause 2.0, Richard is not quite the énorme chapeau de cul of a man he was in The Contract, the love of a good woman (Katy) having tempered his personality, um, a bit . . . .

The Richard VanRyan of The Baby Clause 2.0 is now a doting husband, and a frantic, but loving, family man. When the occasion arises, he’s still quite capable of putting on his infamous hat — whether it’s bullying his way into a hospital or pounding floor numbers on an elevator panel. Katy is, as ever, the softening agent (if you will) in Richard’s life. Her love for Richard, smoothing out his rough edges and bringing out a tender side in her husband that no one thought existed. Katy VanRyan is one smart, miracle-working cookie, and because of her, everybody wins.

In The Baby Clause 2.0, author Melanie Moreland successfully continues Richard and Katy’s story, as they expand from a loving couple into a family. Even in this very short novella, Moreland gives her readers what has become her trademark as a romance author — memorable characters sharing sweet, enduring love.

If you’ve read The Contract, you will not want to miss The Baby Clause 2.0 — it’s like getting a few pieces of chocolate candy after eating an extravagant dessert.

I tilted my head. “I apologize. I’ll try to do better. Is there anything else you want since we’re putting everything on the table?”

She hesitated, her fingers worrying the ugly shirt she wore.

“Spit it out.”

“You can’t, um, you can’t mess around while we’re doing . . . while we’re together.”

“Mess around?”

She looked everywhere but at me. “You can’t sleep with other women. I won’t be humiliated like that.”

“So what you’re saying is: I can’t fuck anyone?”

Her cheeks were so red I thought her head would explode; however, she straightened her shoulders and looked right at me. “Yes.”

This was too fun for me.

“Yes, I can fuck around?”

“No!”

“No fucking,” I enunciated the last word.

“No.”

“You expect me to remain celibate the whole time?” I asked, now incredulous.

“I will be, so I expect you to do the same.”

I snorted. “I doubt it’s anything new for you.”

She threw up her hands. “That’s it. You want to fuck someone? Go fuck yourself, VanRyan.”

– SYNOPSIS –

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.

Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.

Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract— fiancée instead of PA.

What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?

Sparks.

That’s what happens.

Can the power of love really change a person?

Will they survive the contract?

What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

So begins their unconventional relationship—talking, learning, texting, and gradually opening up to one another, all over the fence.

That is, until the day Nathan braves the high fence to protect Kourtney from her past, and changes everything forever.

Can they move forward together, without the buffer of the fence?

– Review –

A simple act of kindness sets the theme for Melanie Moreland’s latest novel, Over the Fence.

When new neighbor Kourtney Whyte moves next door to Nathan Fraser, Nathan finds the aromas of Kourtney’s cooking to be irresistible.  Starved for a home cooked meal, Nathan compliments, the “Chefgirl” next door on the mouth-watering scent, and in a gesture of goodwill, a plate appears atop the fence that separates their two yards.

Through shared “fence” meals, Chefgirl and Nathan (now known as the stray “Tomcat” that Kourtney feeds) begin to know Teaser 2one another. Realizing that his feelings for her are more than just neighborly and having recognized Kourtney’s reluctance to be seen, Nathan respects her wishes  — he stays on his side of the fence. What happens when Tomcat finally comes face to face with his Chefgirl sets the stage for a steamy romance fraught with dramatic twists and painful revelations.  And when all the fences have finally come down, what is revealed is an endless landscape of love.

Author Moreland has effectively used the fence as the metaphorical boundary Kourtney has set up between herself and a painful world.  Tormented by years of taunting, she believes herself to be unloveable. Nathan, plagued with guilt from a tragic past, sees Kourtney as the bright light in his bleak life:

“I looked over my shoulder, grimacing at the barren appearance of my own yard.  I thought how similar the two were to the people who owned them; Kourtney’s yard reflected the bright, lovely oasis she had become in my dark, lonely life.” (p. 139)

Both of these characters are well crafted and Moreland has gifted them with witty dialogue that reads at a fast pace.  Her plot is so engrossing and her writing so contagious that Over the Fence was easily read in one sitting.

Through Moreland’s writing, we see how simple acts of kindness and generosity can dramatically change a life for the better.  There are lessons to be learned here and the author repeatedly weaves into the story examples of goodwill and compassion. Adult reading, Over the Fence teaches us lessons that are valuable at any age.

Can they move forward together, without the buffer of the fence?

Or will their pasts prove to be too much of a barrier?

“I’m going in now. Good night. Your dinner is…up there.”

I turned, looking back in the direction of her voice and I saw it. A plate was perched on the top of the wide top rail of our fence, waiting for me.

“Hey, wait!” I yelled, picking up my chair, and heading to the fence. Reaching up, I grabbed the covered plate, wondering how she managed to get it up there.

“Enjoy your dinner, neighbor.” I knew from the distant sound of her voice, she was already at her door.

“Nathan!” I blurted out.

“I’m sorry?”

“My name is Nathan.”

“Nice to meet you, Nathan. Enjoy your dinner and have a nice evening.”

“No, wait! You can’t go in and not tell me your name!” I pleaded.

There was a tiny sigh. “Kourtney. My name is Kourtney—spelled with a K.”

A grin tugged at my lips. Even her name was soft.

“Well, nice to meet you, Kourtney, spelled with a K. Whatever this meal is, I know it’ll be great.”
